I am looking to buy a dual bench supply. While looking at ebuy, plenty of HP 6227B's and HP 6253A's are available within my price range of 200-300 that will do the job, but I also saw several different new Chinese power supplies with very good features and specs in the same price range. Dual 30V@3A, plus 5V@6A output CV CL etc. So my decision is whether to buy an old HP and probably have to rehab it but with known specs or to try the new Chinese unit also with good specs but unknown to me whether they meet their own specs or whether it is cheaply constructed and just waiting to fall apart. I would like to hear from those who own or have used these and any comments good or bad about them. Names and models would be helpful. Thanks for any info you can give. Larry
What specs do you need?
I have one of those chinese supplies, a dual 30V/3A+5V/3A. You will find identical supplies under many names, like "Digimess HY3003-3" or "Isotech IPS2303dd" or "Instek GPC-3030". On mine, the 5V is low (measures ~4 V) and can't be adjusted back into spec, so there must be component failure somewhere in there. I haven't looked into it, since I have plenty of supplies on my bench. My point is, it is what it is, and it is not an HP quality instrument. And you can almost always depend on finding service manuals on Agilent's website even for decades-old gear.
Once nice point about the aforementioned Chinese supplies is they (some?) have a "audio amp" test mode, where you can move an internal jumper to make the current limiter operate in an averaging mode. In other words, it can provide bursts of higher-than-rated current non-continuously, which can be great for testing an amplifier.
