NEC projectors?

I notice inventory solutions has a whole bunch of NEC MT810's and MT 820's in various conditions, but I can't find any reviews on these projectors. Many of the descriptions describe dusty or dirty panels.

My questions are as follows:
1) does anybody here have any experience with these pj's- are they any good.
2) can the dusty or dirty panels inside be cleaned?
3) are they easy for someone who is not a technician to work on? (if so it seems there would be a lot of "parts" projectors available.)
and finally
4) could they be retrofitted with a different bulb (one not specifically made for projectors)

i have seen these also. www.projectorcentral.com has both listed. Very little info on the 810 and a bit more on the 820.

to answer your questions
-no i don't have experience with these projectors - sorry

-if they are just dirty or dusty they should be easy to clean with a cotton cloth, dirt can only accumulate on the outside of an lcd unless it is damaged

-from my experience most projects aren't to hard to take appart, just have to be very careful

I would like to know if a new bulb could be retrofited also. I would think so, the only problem being that you would have to do a little work such as possibly replacing the ballast which can get quite large and would be quite a pain to replace and put inside the original enclosure

Just got a NEC MT-810 from Inventory Solutions

It arrived Friday, and I have been playing with it all weekend(4 player Halo and a LOT of PC emulators, as well as watching a few movies (like The Ring)) first off the projector I got was rated as GOOD-USED (which is the second highest rating that Inventory Solutions gives it’s projectors (I couldn’t find any one rated high than that for that model of projector, so I just went for the one with the least number of lamp hours) The quality is wonderful. The projector is quiet(not silent but unnoticeable during any movie or game(my computer makes more noise and it has sound baffling)) and when running it’s VGA mode (known as RGB to many of you) the picture is sharp and brilliant. Here are the problems if you are considering getting one. First off the black isn’t true black, it’s as close as a TV can generate which might not seem like a problem unless you are trying to create a true “theater like” experience. Also the lens is dusty which is obvious in all white or all black moments (but impossible to see when there is motion. It appears as slightly lighter spots on the projection surface. Also there is a small amount of dot crawl when viewing anything trough SVideo or RCA inputs (the projector supports a SVideo, RCA, and two VGA inputs (one Mac one PC, but you can convert them with the right cable) it really is slight, but not invisible. In VGA mode the image is rock solid, so if you have the option of playing DVDs from your PC with something like WinDVD or PowerDVD I would recommend it, it makes a huge difference. The Colors seem more brilliant in VGA mode but I have no definitive way of testing this. Well I can answer any other questions I love this projector and I think the forum rocks (long time reader, first time poster)

brightness

While direct light (from an uncovered window or lamp right next to the projection surface) makes watching anything on the projector almost impossable, the projector fairs rather well in a moderatly dark room (just at the point where it might be hard reading) By covering the windows with sheets I can get a great image (naturally the image is much better if there are more colors to display)

P.S. As for cleaning the LCD, so far online I have found only one place that specificaly says it cleans LCD panels (what is actually dirty in my projector) and they charge $350 to do it and would require that I ship my projector to them and have it shipped back) Is there anouther term? Would repair shops do the same thing?

I have an MT 810 and an Elmo HP- A305 SD w/ a Sharp QA 1150. The pic out of the 810 is noticably brighter. The ohp/panel requires a darkened room, the 810 is perfectely viewable in a semi-lit room. Colors are brighter on the 810 also, but that could just be the not-so-hot Sharp. And the 810 is quiet!!! compared to the Elmo/Sharp turbine plant.

Hey Sryx, have you done any panel cleaning yet? I've been wondering what the difference between the 810 and 820 is and if its poss to swap bulbs - or if there's more to 150 extra lumens than just bulbs... (I have yet to actually see any of this live - I'm in France and all this stuff is in MD at my parents. Dad's been playing eyes and ears for me (and sending pics) I'm looking forward to getting the 810 in about 2 weeks...)( and I'm selling the Elmo and the Sharp, so if anyone is interested...)

Still haven’t done any cleaning (looking for a place that will do it for less than $200) as for the 820 bulbs in an 810 projector, my guess is no, just because a 700 lumen bulb would run a bit hotter, so greater measures would have be taken to insure that the device doesn’t melt. One measure (and this is just a hunch, because outwardly the 820 and 810 are identical, Inventory Solutions even sent me a 820 manual with my projector) that there is some latch preventing you from putting a 820 bulb in. Oh yes and the 810 is actually listed in Windows 98 as a monitor type. Just thought I’d say that : P

Hey Jason,
sounds cool. You're not planning on trying the cleaning yourself? Can't imagine that its all too dificult.

Could you do me a huge favor and check what the manual says as to running the projector on 220V (I didn't get a manual)? On the back it says 110/220 but are there any switches, etc.? If it has a laptop style internal power supply it ought to be OK (thats what insolv told me too), but I'd rather be sure.
If you could also check what I do for a PAL input (menus, etc), that'd be great.

Thanx
Steve

Check here for manuals. I'm at work right now and my manual is at home.
