Tried this combination?
I have a NEC 1550 that I am going to use in my setup. I was wondering if anyone had used either the 1545 or the 1550 with the 250 watt metal halide bulb that is available froy diylabs. If so, what results Please list whether it was a projector conversion and what type or custom built box. In addition, was a reflector used, type, ect....
Thanks,
Jeff

Ahh yes
I would love to just jump out there and try this setup. However, my budgetary constraints do not allow for numerous misteps. I get to spend time in the penalty box for every costly error I make.
Having researched the idea a good bit here, it looks like the setup would work very well. I good reflector and condenser lens would surely help.
I will just use the OHP until my funds recover, and then I will be trying the setup I mentioned.

I here that. Well, i have a little bit of money to sink into my project, so im going to try the double ended mh bulb, and i already have a nec 1545v lcd. I'll keep you guys posted.
hey Phil, i've found a good lighting company in your area "OPTECH LIGHTING" and i've been talking to them since friday and they are searching for a ballast for me the HQI they sell are a bit pricey but the ballast should be cheap.

Brown is coming with NEC 1550
I should receive my screen today. I am still waiting on my 3M 9550 projector ( it was cheap so I will start with it). I am planning to disassemble and build a new box for the screen to protect the components. I will also be trying out the split fresnel idea to see what it can do. I bought a couple of the wide squirrel fans that someone talked about (using another name for them), and I machined an aluminum sleeve to output the air at a width of 1/2 inch to allow cooling between the lcd and screen. Someome else mentioned that a separation of greater that 1/2 inch created screendoor effects. If I can achieve good results, I will build a custom wood box to eliminate light leaks.
Eventually I would like to try the 250 watt MH bulb with a custom reflector machined from aluminum. ( I have a lathe to play with).
Anyway, I have been lurking for a while, and I will let you all know how it turns out. Unless I screw up the lcd screen 😉

Yea, but your a good newb 😉 . You do not go posting threads asking questions every one here is tired of answering, and are readily avalible in the forum archives. Good luck with your setup btw.
It has begun
I started my disassembly of the NEC 1550. I must say that it is not really a big deal. I am just taking my time and going slowly. I am now at the point of removing the backlight from the lcd screen. I have to stop off and get a set of small screwdrivers to finish the job. If anyone gets started on this and needs someome to help walk them through let me know. I can help out while it is fresh on my mind.
No if only my overhead projector would show up. 🤐
Bozos shipped me a printer and some other guy my projector.

I just ordered a NEC 1550 and should be getting it on Monday. It would be great if you could walk me through the steps. I am specifically interested in knowing how I can fit it on the OHP and use that as a frame.
I just mounted my 1545v in plexiglass. It looks good, but i have yet to test it out on a projector. The good news is that none of the ribbon cables broke and frankly i do not see what the problem is. I made sure to always keep the lcd on a flat surface, and never picked it up/let the cables flex. Taking it apart was not so bad, the only thing I would warn of was the fact that you have to un glue some very thin metal stripping... A heat gun should be used. I sliced my thumb "really deep" messing with it. Another case of "if i had the right tools." The funny thing is that my dad has a whole shop full of good stuff i could go over and use 😀 . Anywho, the bottom line if you want to take this thing apart do not touch it untill it is mounted on a piece of plexi/plastic/wood that will hold the flexcables in place. Now I can literaly juggle the thing around, slap it on an ohp, or mount it in a custom case without the worry of breaking it 🙂 . How much did the plexi cost? $14.60 (actually I paid cash and got it for $14)! I called the glass shop (very nice people and service) and it was ready for pick up the next day. Well worth the price... much cheaper than $220 if you break ribbon cables. Im not 100% happy with the design as it is simply the lcd sandwiched beteen two pieces of plexi, but it works for now. Im going to buy some thicker glass and make a projection panel stlye case with a fan to hold the whole thing in. I will post pics as soon as i finish the roll of film (yea... some people still use film).
