Near field (DSP) ribbon and 3 x 4" drivers a good idea?

Hi,

I have a pair of Fountek NeoX 3.0 Ribbon Tweeters I salvaged.

Would an "on desk" enclosure with three PEERLESS TYMPHANY 4" mid-woofers and the ribbon be a good idea, crossover with one of the woofers doing mids and bass and the other two just bass?

Not sure on sealed or ported.

If it's a good idea, anyone seen anything like this 4" cheaper in Australia, the Peerless is $60 and I'd like something around $40 that can get up to the ribbon KHz.

Thanks.

Thanks, I didn't mean to attach anything, must have accidentally added the attachment.

The Peerless is $59 but the SB12PFCR25 is $79 so that's out.

Maybe the SB12PAC25-4 they're $45?

I'll potentially back them up with a sub, I have a salvaged 12" woofer here.

They only seen to do a 4ohm version of the SB12PAC25-4.

The Qts on the Peerless is 0.53 the SB12PAC25-4 is 0.31 so I guess ported is the way to go.

I'm off to play around with WinISD, I've no idea what size of enclosure I would need.

I'm new to all this and the thinking was that I could get a bit better bass by adding a third 4" while keeping the size down.

If I do add a sub it'd be more for gaming use.

I put three SB12PAC25-4 into WinISD, set a vented 12L enclosure tuned to 65Hz and that looked OK, pretty flat?

1 x 6.8cm diameter vent 16.45cm long = 1044hz 1st port resonance, 2.8m/sec peak air velocity - from what I've read a high resonance is good because it can be damped and the air velocity is fine as it can be as high as 20m/s?

Oh, wait a minute, I think the default is 1W of power, I changed it to 30W and my air velocity went to 15.5m/s.

No idea if during setup these "alignment" options are important, I can't even remember what I chose:

QB3
BB4/SBB4
C4/SC4
EBS3
EBS6

Also I have to look up the designs: 4th & 6th order bandpass and ABC.

On desk….near field?……you’re going to want to keep that type of system acoustically small…..one woofer per tweeter. Cross high to a co located small subwoofer…….something like a build in/on monitor riser or behind the monitor panel. Keep the vertical listening axis at the seated ear height…..the directivity mismatch of the ribbon and cone can be difficult in the near field . Cross the woofer and tweeter high……..very high IME.

very high IME.
Thanks, what's IME?

Acoustically small, is that so the speaker essentially "fits" within the size of my head at head height, the mids need to be pointing at my ear, what size of woofer makes sense a nicer 4" that can handle 3KHz?

How small a sub, I was thinking under the desk for game gun noises and explosions?

I'm learning lots, thanks all!

I found two 5" SB15NRXC30-4 in an old speaker, so I'll probably use those, interesting that the designer/builder has stuck three 19x25mm cylindrical neodymium magnets on the back of each driver, no idea why and a quick search on here leaves me none the wiser?

Yes……4-5” in the near field of crossing to a sub is all you need. I’m a huge fan of coax’s too….i often advocate for those new to the hobby grab a pair of used or with damaged cabinet Q 150s and develop their chops by building new cabinets for them…….the only legit weak spot of the KEF. Once redone properly, they‘re every bit as good as the LS50.
