Here's a preview of an upcoming build thread for John K's NaO Note II RS. This was an extremely rewarding project and I want to thank John K. for his patience and advising along the way. As a disclaimer, the modifications to the side panels have not been approved by the designer. I will document this from the beginning when I have more time. These are by far the coolest and best sounding loudspeakers I've built. Being there in the sound is one way to describe it. Piano, cello, vocals, and choir are pure bliss. I listened to a few good pipe organ selections where the sound was massive and many stops are pulled. The intensity and clarity made my jaw drop. Still experimenting with placement but these things seem to like space. My Denon receiver is the preamp but these loudspeakers definitely deserve some better upstream electronics. That's an Emotiva 7 channel amp for the 3+3 LR from 200Hz up, with the Crown XLS mated to the Peerless XLS (weird coincidence) wired in parallel.
Bass is tight and punchy but in this huge room, it would probably take several more open baffle subs to adequately pressurize the space. Hence the Ultimax 15" finished in Zebrawood. 😀😀😀
With good recordings, these speakers really do vanish into a coherent sound source as suggested on John's website. With bad recordings, well, you'll just cringe because you'll know it's a bad recording since these things don't hide much. 😱
I'm working on a solution to organize the wires in the back, but I kind of like the idea that it looks like hair if you use your imagination. Can't imagine many people lacking that ability if they participate in this forum. I welcome your comments and questions.

Thanks Steve--At some point I'll be sending invites to some locals (200 mile radius) to come listen if there is sufficient interest.
Just recognised those baffles!
Very nice!
I did have two prototype baffles with a roundover going all the way down the edges which might have worked with your moddified side pannels.
What gasket material did you use as I noticed the screws holding the drivers in went all the way through the baffle?

Gasket material was slightly thinner than anticipated. It was some stuff I got from PE several years back but I think that it lost some of it's mojo after spending two summers in the garage. This is a cosmetic fix that I will make at some point but I dread doing it.
John K. warned that the lack of frame may change some of the measurements but if there was a change, it was probably minimal. Now that they have broken in nicely, I think I'll run a few more measurements just for kicks.

I believe that question has been asked and better answered in other places. I have not heard the Orion's so for a comparative listening experience, I cannot comment with any authority. For an objective comparison, I can only refer you to what information may be available on the world wide web. However I caution that in (on?) such a place, opinions and beliefs run rampant often masquerading as the ultimate in truth and fact.
They sound great to me and any visual resemblance to an existing design by SL was purely coincidental on my part. When cutting the side baffles, I made a critical error so along with a few words of profanity, rather than starting over, in a moment of inspiration I decided to shorten all of the side panels and go forward without the frame. I did this knowing that my modification was not endorsed by John K. and I informed him of my change. With the DSP crossover, making these adjustments on the fly is indeed one of the perks of building this loudspeaker. 😛

These look a lot like SL's Orion's. What is the difference?
I do belive a member on here built both designs, the LX521 and Note II RS and had his preference.
