That was the bottom model of that series, but they all sounded pretty good. It's a Nak after all.
So, for $15 you are worried about the D/A converter? I used to fix them under warranty, but I can't remember what D/A is in that one. I can tell you that the audio path after the DAC is better than the average player.

I have found that the DAC chip(s) used ae only the first step in sound quality. The next important pieces of the puzzle are the filtering and data error correction, and the analogue circuits after the DAC. I have heard PCM1702 systems that sound unappealing, and yet the TDA1540 DACs in the Nakamichi OMS-7 sound really good. Far better sound than they should have. (14 BIT DAC).
