Nakamichi CD Player 3: "plays" fine, sound absolutely trashed, what do?

Are you referring to original MB 1,2,3 or also MB1s, 2s ,3s which are different ?

I have no experience with the MB or MBs, I am refering to the CD 3. As stated, in all the cases the RF AMP must be recapped, otherwise check the laser with the scope.

In another CD repair thread the guy cleaned the backside of the laser lens, which made it read.
