Very strange-- but absolutely conclusive it's duff. Perhaps it actually hasn't been replaced, just mauled about !!
See you have just posted ( me I didn't look on next page ) --- well done.
Idler tyre, if it will come off the pulley (depending on it's size ) you can turn them inside out to put the inner surface on the outside --- bit of a bodge job but try it. Failing that rough it up with sandpaper.

Hi Col

Nice work! Not bad for $1.25!

Regarding the idler tyre - I bought a new one for mine, never thought of trying to turn my old one inside-out, so thanks for the tip Mooly.

Col - Perhaps you could do a minor favour for me now yours is working, idler tyre permitting. Can you check the behavior of the 'Counter Zero Return' function please? I would like to know if yours works as it passes through zero in either direction, as mine only does anything on Rewind.

Hi Steve,

I have ordered a new idler tire from Jeff at nakamichi.us I sent him the url for this discussion. Here was his remarks:

"The cam control motor was the cause of the failure symptom. It will fail again! When you spun the motor pulley, you moved it off it's bad spot. With patience, it can be disassembled and cleaned.

The regulator IC was likely not the cause of the problem. The IC might or might not be bad. If it is, it was likely OK before you had attempted the repair.

Once I get the idler tire and have checked the cam control motor, will gladly report back on the tape counter.

A tip for low voltage DC (brush type) motors. Fully disconnect from circuit and apply more volts than designed for briefly. Perhaps a 9 volt battery or similar. This can help clean up the commutator, as a lot of motors are semi sealed. If you are really determined you can get in them but its not pretty afterwards. Add a drop of oil to the center phosphour bronze bearing.

New Idler Tyre fitted

Idler tyre arrived yesterday morning and I have just fitted it. BX-100 is now up and running.

Overall, was a bit of labour involved in saving this tape deck from the skip but total dollar outlay was only around $10 including the regulator and the Tyre.

Haven't touched the cam motor, will wait for it to fail.

Tape Counter

Hi Col

The counter on my BX125 didn't work properly either, which is why I had to open it up. To be more accurate, it would get stuck at the transistion through '000' in 'Play', or would not move off from '000' in 'Play'. At that point the counter has to operate a switch for the 'Zero Stop' function, which seems to put an additional load on the belt. The old belt had stretched over the years and would just slip. I had one of about the right size in the junk box, and that got it working again.

I can see in your picture 1408 that the belt in your BX100 is present, so perhaps you have the same problem. Does it work if you turn the pully on the counter by hand?

BTW, how does your machine actually sound, and have you made any inroads into that box of tapes yet? And if you do happen to come across a service manual for these decks at some time I'd welcome a copy of it.

Regards

Steve

I'll have a look at the tape counter down the track a bit, oh well atleast it is stuck on "000". Don't want to take the back off it now as Iv'e started playing my way through the box of tapes. 😉

It's sounding very warm and analogue. Which is ideal for these Melbourne winter evenings. Bit like sitting in front of a log fire with a brandy 😀

cheers,

Nakamichi BX-100 capstan motor?

Hi,

My dad recently gave me his old BX-100.

The idler tire was fried, so I replaced it. But now I’ve discovered that the tape plays almost double speed too fast!

The guy I bought the tire from said it was a problem with the capstan motor. What is that, and is it tweakable, or should I just replace it? I disassembled a few things poking around – is it possible I wound a belt incorrectly?

Thanks so much!
Tony

Hi Tony

Are you 100% sure you got the idler back in the right place? Does it Fast Forward & Rewind properly? As the idler tyre is at the front of the tape transport, I can't see how you could have disturbed the capstan drive belt or the capstan motor. However, just to make sure, you will probably be able to see a distinct 'path' mark on the flywheel rim where the belt should run. Check that the belt looks 'right' and is in line with the brass pulley on the motor when viewed from above.

If all looks well I would suggest that you remove the glazed front from the tape door, load a tape, select 'Play', and then slow or briefly stop the takeup spool - if your double-speed playback continues unchanged when you do this it proves that capstan is indeed running too fast. If so, you can then try adjusting the captan motor speed - it has a tiny hole in the back to access a trimmer. Use a plastic tool if possible, or if not a jeweller's screwdriver, but avoid shorting to the body of the motor.

If slowing/stopping the takeup spool DOES change the speed, it would suggest to me that the pinch roller is failing to engage with the capstan. If one doesn't meet the other firmly enough the takeup spool might be pulling the tape along instead of the capstan. Use a tape with a see-through shell, and watch what happens when you select 'Play'. The black rubber-faced pinch-roller should move up into the tape shell and firmly grip the silver 'needle-like' capstan, sandwiching the tape inbetween. I believe a spring keeps the two parts in contact - has it broken?

Hope this is of some help.

Hi asiwouldsay, I hope you have luck fixing your BX-100. Stevecoles advice is golden 🙂

I'm really happy with my BX-100. I currently have it hooked up to my computer using a Behringer UCA200 USB sound card. I have been digitizing my tape collection using Audacity to dump the tapes to wav files and then "remastering" them. Iv'e found that the quality of the finished product is better than most of the 128kbps mp3s I have.
