I recently acquired a used CDI with CDM 4 transport. Initially, everything was okay but but my problem starts when I placed the puck and closed the lit and it reads Error...but after a couple of times of taking out and putting back the cd, it will be okay and start to function properly...after that ,same problem will crop up again and again and it is getting more frequent now.Can anybody give a few pointers on what could be the real problems here and how to fix this iisue.
It sounds very much like it is simply a case of misadjustment. Too often, servicers, even at manufacturer facilities, do the adjustments only with test discs. The CDM-0 thru 4 units need to be adjusted to best compromise point(on laser current & focus offset) on a wide variety of discs, from test discs to cd-r's to beat up old cd's. Only other issue to worry about, reliability-wise, is that every Roederstein("ROE") & Philips electrolytic cap should be replaced, preferrably with Nichicon. Naim liked to use solid tantalum caps for the most part, which are good for reliability but not great for sound, so there should be only a small number of lytics to replace.
I finally realised after thorough inspection, the laser swing arm does not go back to it's original position and that caused the reading error when I playback the CD.I suspect the pivot bearings could be a bit rusty or could there be other reasons? For the time being, I have to nudge a bit the arm to go back to it's original reading position every now and then..
The radial tracking arm rides on a single ball bearing on top & another on bottom, and these never get dislodged out of the "pockets" unless the arm gets improperly forced by something. So, more likely that the pickups ribbon cable is being interfered with or is misplaced. Simple to look under the mech & check.
