New My NAD 3020A, with no turntable connected, has a loud "hiss" when 'phono' is selected, but all the other outputs are super quiet.
Any suggestions as to what would cause this?
Also, thinking of replacing the four main power supply caps with either Panasonic FC cap, or Nichicon KW or FW.
Would appreciate advice on this choice, and is there anywhere other than the big suppliers who supply authentic caps in the UK without high delivery or minimum order prices?

Have you tried it with the phono inputs shorted as a test?
I suspect its probably not the quietest phono stage around... and hiss that is equal on both channels will be down to inherent circuit noise.
Look for caps that will physically fit first. Choose reputable big brand names such as those you mention.
CPC (part of Farnell) can have some good delivery deals, its a case of looking around. Don't buy parts like these from eBay.

Thanks Mooly, appreciated!
Yes, just tried with inputs shorted, and hiss continues at constant level.
Might a changeover of all the original lavender coloured caps in the NAD likely lead to a cure, or is this more unlikely than likely?

I think it is unlikely to be a fault as such I'm afraid. Hiss is more down to the circuit design and design compromises... but obviously without hearing it it is hard to say.
If both channels are the same then it is unlikely a fault in the phono stages.
Old electrolytics in stuff like the NAD are probably a worthwhile replacement exercise but I can't see that improving the noise tbh.

Thank you. Glad to be saved a, potentially, wild goose chase!
Maybe it'll sound better once it's been connected to a turntable with ground.
Also, you wouldn't happen to know something I've just posted re a Yamaha P2200 - where could I get replacement bulbs, 14V 0.8A...?
