Next groupbuy is at the corner and I like to build this amp. I'd like to make it an integrated amp together with the clone note (LDR), are the people out there with the same combo (composite+passive pre) happy with this?
Most LDR that I have seen sch for alter both the input impedance and output impedance as the volume is varied. That can lead to quite variable RF attenuation. Careful selection of ancilliary component values, either side, can ameliorate that variablity.

Hello, i use a Clone Note as passive preamp/volume control for my setup. It performs very well upstream of My_ref FE amplifier, first of all it sounds very transparent and clean at any volume. I requested 10k impedance to Uriah.
BUT i suggest using a battery power supply for it, otherwise getting a TOTALLY silent preamp could require a bit of struggle. A single 9V or 12V battery with decent capacity should last for weeks - if not months, as current absorption is very low.

Sorry i forgot to state one thing: CPC1219s were not included in my kit, so i had to buy them for myself. They were not so easy to find...
But Uriah has been VERY gentle and patient in helping me to build the Clone Note (i had some problems due to a malfunctioning CPC1219), many thanks to him!

I have few pics, as my house has been struck by earthquakes at the end of october, just 2/3 days after i finished assembling my Clone Note, so i couldn't take pictures of the final state.
The attached pictures were taken at work in progress and with 12V linear power supply.

N.B. If you opt for linear power supply, connecting LDR boards' grounds to Pot board's PS ground is a must to avoid hum at higher volume. No need for it if you use a battery as PS

I purchased that r-core transformer (and many other) at James Wu's Hifi Store, in Aliexpress:

They build very good custom hifi transformers using Japan-made high quality silicon-steel sheets and OFC copper wires. Quality is very good for the price, absolute silence even for high voltage ones. You can contact them via Aliexpress and request whatever transformer you should need.

I am OK and so is my family, but i still have an unstable situation about my home (on rent, luckily).
Earthquakes still stricking here in Italy after 4 months (but lower power after october 30th), too.
 
Sorry i forgot to state one thing: CPC1219s were not included in my kit, so i had to buy them for myself. They were not so easy to find...
But Uriah has been VERY gentle and patient in helping me to build the Clone Note (i had some problems due to a malfunctioning CPC1219), many thanks to him!

As i said, a simple 9V-12V battery is enough, you don't need more complications. A little 9V square battery you normally can find inside many little home appliances (like the one you linked) would be OK as well and will last several days.
But if you want something more lasting, a 12V 5ah battery pack will assure more weeks of play - if you choose a rechargeable one it will be even cheaper in time.
Just connect the 9/12V output of the battery to the + input in pot board and the 0V output to yhe 0V input in pot board. Fix the battery inside the chassis using a pair of plastic straps. Nothing more to do.
Clone Note has a regulator onboard so no worries about voltage decrease when battery discharges.
If you want to do something more complex and easy to use, connect the rechargeable battery output to a switch, one position leading to Clone Note input, the other to a connector in the chassis, where you will connect an external charger. So you could switch between On and Off/Charge.
But don't fit the charger inside the chassis: chargers are 99% switching power supplies and that could interfere with sound purity.
About battery type, i find that some brands' Ni-Mh and Ni-Cd batteries (ex. Panasonic Cadmica or Imedion) sound a little better than lithium ones, but they're more difficult to manage and less lasting, especially Ni-Cd, so lithium is ok for me.

Just saw in the groupbuy that there is a due date for the kits, good news! Hopefully just in time for my vacation in february when my wife and I are expecting our second boy. Soldering in between switching of the diapers:scratch:
 
Advice die r-core: 2x21 or 2x22 / 120va or 160va

Contacted James Wu (diyerzone) for two r-core transformers. I think I will buy them there, the ones from selectronics are sold out. They replied very quickly and the price is reasonable (high shipping cost because of the weight). If I buy a good pair 300va toroids it will cost me the same amount of money, and most of you seem to prefer the sound of r-cores, so...

Last few days I read a lot of threads again and for 4ohm speakers the advise again and again is 1x230v 120va 2x22v. My speakers are DTQWT MK III (see link, second link = my own build), 94db sensitivity and around 4 ohm. Am I correct? Or should I get a 2x21? There are a few impedance curves (see attached file), so maybe a 22v is better than 21... And, soundwise, is it better to go for something higher like 160va?

Parts from mouser rived already, as did a nice and small package from hifiUK with amtrans, z-foil, supreme, MLythic (wow, heavy caps!!!) and CMC RCA + speaker posts. Really excited to build this amp!

i am going to pull the trigger on some really nice 4 ohm speakers. Right now I am running 6 ohm speakers on 24V secondaries, and it works quite well. Now i really don't want to buy 2 new transformers for the 4ohm speakers *ggg*

I kind of remember reading somewhere, that using 24v on 4ohm load should be fine as long as i don't max out the volume. I can't find the thread anymore :-(

Anyone got an oppinion on that statement?

I can't find it either, but the recommendation was for 22 V with 4 ohm speakers. That said, my understanding is that 24 V should be OK as long as you have more than minimum VA rating on the transformer. I believe the issue is that the 4 ohm speaker will require more current at a given watt input, but won't require as much voltage. Since 4 ohm speakers often have similar or lower sensitivity (dB/Watt), the 4 ohm will typically need more current for the same sound level. So, in summary, if you don't play very loud and the sensitivity of the new speakers isn't too low, then you should be OK with your current transformers. Also, if your 24 V transformers are rated more than minimum (180 VA for a toroid, if memory serves), you should have current reserve.
