I have some more (thanks God, there is some sun today)

Hi Scottmoose 🙂

And this is a man who says he has to make parts by hand?
Well, as I said, only the little parts that have several funny angles 😉
The rest (big plates) are cut with a circular saw by a young woodworker and my humble self.

Which plans did you use & then scale BTW?
I used the "bigpond" site's plans (now introuvable ).

I have a copy of the original @home. I cleaned the dirty files a little. I can send them to anyone interested.
I have to say that this is much easier project than the full Autograph, because I can lift it and take it from my "attelier" to my living room whenever i want. 😀

Nice transducers, don't you think?
I will be calling for help next year when I attempt the 10 incher "metronome" 😉
Can we make an "Eiffel tower Metronome"??? 😀
(or is it useless?)

Ciao,
M

Hi lukeyucn,
You got mail😉

Well, you know how loooong projects like these are...as time passes by one is less critical about the looks and more hurried to get the #### thing working😡

One pic with unit not quite finished but in working order:

Again, front horn is a pain in the ***; I got it short on A-P axis and I managed to add lenght. I will then add another frame and perhaps veneer.

I am listening mono: first impressions (wich are allways good with one's own work 😉 ) are that the transducer is very good, it has an extended, soft sound on HF's and nice midrange, bass is OK for now but I'm sure it will improve as unit brakes-in and when the partner speaker is ready.

This is my first full-range driver (if we don't count the lilliput pico-tannoy; see above) and I'd like to say that, compared to multiway passive speakers and making a parallel between speakers and instruments, the sound is more "acoustic", the later being more "electric".
I wonder if I made myself clear :xeye:

I'll post better pics soon.

Cheers,
M

Here I go again 🙂

These speakers will be around 105cm tall, with the small "base".
I tell you that they are much easier to build than the full sized ones. Unfortunatelly, I lack many mechanical tools. Some pieces are to be made by hand 🙁

Oh! I can't wait to listen some chamber music through them 😎

Regards,
M

Do these large speaker produce reasonable high frequencies?, this I assume is being used as a fullrange?

Dear Gychang,

HF? You bet!
Look at Audio Nirvana's super10 datasheet:

In bold I traced what I guess would be the enclosure's "response" with an x transducer.
I think the box complements well the typical "climbing" response of FR's 😎

Rough dimensions:
heigh= 95cm + 10 of a wood base.
width= I guess around 65cm. I haven't measured them yet.
Anyway, corner mounting uses little room 😉

M

will you adopt me?

:clown:

please-shoot me with whatever you have (plans, pics ,whatever ) regarding autographs........
I'm 40 (almost!) now,and I plan to make at least 5 pairs of large spks for my self 'till I'm here on this planet 😉

Autographs (with capital A!) are certainly few of first one, among A7 and KHs.........

you're my man - this sort of commitment is always nice to see :worship: :clown:

and yes-my mail is ,say, sasica5ATgmail.com for these preciouss files ................

Hi Zenmod 😀
Thansk for the compliments.

I can't adopt you! I'm your age! We would look funny walking on the street hand by hand :clown:

You got mails 😉
Please confirm reception

Probably you won't build another after them 😉 I run the fullsized Autographs in activelly biamped mode and it's like being in concert😎 Just find a good big room for them.

Yeah, one of the good things of being on this planet/classroom is playing with acoustics and electronics  We will cry when we get our promotion :clown:

Cheers,
M

"whoa!
Blue car!"

files saved in my PC 😉

whenever you make nice pic of your autographs, just shoot my mail box 😉

tnx again...................

Well, how do they sound anyway?

I thought for once that you better build one to know how good they are, but, as wonderful as they are to me, I would feel guilty after encouraging anibody to build them 😱 ...I mean, who want to spend two months of his life making these fine instruments??? Except myself, that is...
(I think that with the experience gained the next pair will be far more easy 😉 )

Listening with: CDPRO-2M transport-> my US$10 NOS DAC (my superDAC is on permanent repair)->"My-reference"/"Kookaburra" integrated amp-> Autograph replica.
Cabling with DIY 20AWG OCC copper.

My first CD is a favourite of mine and I'm sure of yours too :clown:
it is Karl Muck's recording of Parsifal's third act, starring Gotthelf Pistor and Ludwig Hofmann...and also Bayreuth's Big bronze bells. No kidding, everytime I listen mono I have a crush for my Historic opera recordings. Stereo is much better though. This is a cheap Naxos double CD, but nothing cheap about its sound! The remastering engeneer is a GENIOUS...I already new that but I never heard this CD sound so unbelievably good: wide, high and deep soundstage; robust and powerful voices; distinct acoustic instruments (this is a 1928 recording). Particularly good are double basses and the said bells.

Next some jazz: Ella and Louis and E&L again (Verve;remastered) These enclosures rock with jazz! 😀 As said the front horns do some magic with voices; allways round, robust, warm like in real life. Horns also benefit brass instruments, that jump over you with powerful attacks (Hi sensitivity transducer and box). Strings are very textured and fullbodied: I think I mentioned before that these speakers sound as "acoustic" instruments.
In "kind of blue" first track has these bass lines that are quite low: my Tannoy Definition 500 get them very dark, powerfull and defined (hence its name) but these Autographs sound like double basses emiting bass notes, with appropriate bow and box vibrations and room reverb (though not as authoritative; other amp and cables).

I could go further but you know what I mean: the enclosures make a typical presentation no matter the scale. Round, full, expanding soundstage. Energetic dynamics. Fullbodied instrumets and voices. Coloured? Probably, but very satisfying.

I must state that boxes are not finished yet. They are not hermetic as there is a small front slit between front structures and upper cover. I will have to travel to the woodworker's place to finish it. Also a small slit under the front cover. This may explain one of the two mistakes or week points of the enclosures so far: small perceived bump on midbass. Once it is closed i will have to reevaluate and perhaps stuff some wool on rear horn's throat.
The other week point is some notes beaming when you stand near the speaker. I noticed this when ear is on line with the slope of the front horn. Nothing abnormal on listening position.

Two aspects that I'm very proud of:
1) my intuition about AudioNirvana's and Autograph enclosure complement prouved right: subjectivelly there is no prominence of any frequencies (save the mentioned midbass, but on far field listening and not allways a bad thing), surtout no HF prominence.

2) Audio Nirvana super10 is a great speaker IMHO 🙂

Cheers,
M

Well, my dears, here's a little story from uncle M 😀

I first planned to build these speakers because aunt M was mad at me for spending so much time on my two living rooms listening to my two main systems 😎 until late night 😉
The bed was cold and lonelly to her taste (I know you understand, kids).

I said to myself: you have to build a third system as good and cheap as you can, in order to continue late night sessions on the bedroom 😉 Yes, I know. Sometimes I am too clever.

The room has great corners (4 to be exact) so the speakers were and easy choice: the present mini-Autographs.
Total= US$400.
(including woodworkers fees; and I bought more wood than I needed)

The best/cheapest amp that I know of: "my-reference" amp from our mates from twistedpearaudio.com
Total= US$230 ; with integrated Kookaburra preamp.

The source is at final tweaking phase: Samsung DVD P651 multiformat player.
Total: US$100. I plan to invest around US$100 more on mods.

For around US$800 I made a very nice sounding system 😎

Not all plans allways go wright 🙁
The cheap Samsung multiformat player is sounding so nice that it is being used on the big Autograph active system.

The mini-Autograph sounds so good to me that, after a challenge with my Tannoy Definition D500 speakers (around US$3K when new) I decided to sell the Tannoy's 😀
Honestly, the D500 were put to shame by the AN super10 based miniAutograph. They outperformed the D500 in every aspect, safe cleanyness and "audiophile factor" (point instrument's localisation). My new creations were evident winers on the most important aspects: "musicality"; dynamics and speed; timbres and textures; naturalness of voices; overall enjoyment and "dance factor" ; credibility of bass/midbass.

The test was done with my modded UCD400 (200Watt/8ohm) wich is a better partner than the untweaked "my-ref", so the speakers are staying on first floor, until I make another pair of Autographs, this time a trapezoidal shaped variation to fit better my narrow room. For that I will be asking for help...Scoot, Qi  to do the calculations and diagrams.

Will there be a courageous one that will check if my statement is true and build his own??? 😉

Cheers,
M
