Greetings, all!
I wanted to share my Pete Millett LR Phono build! I had Dave at Landfall Systems build the chassis, which was a bit pricey, but I am very happy with the end result.
Some key features of my build:
I'm not sure how this compares to a 100% stock build, but I am very, very happy with mine.
I wanted to share my Pete Millett LR Phono build! I had Dave at Landfall Systems build the chassis, which was a bit pricey, but I am very happy with the end result.
Some key features of my build:
- I used a power supply from Sparkos Labs instead of Pete's. Again, fairly expensive, but I am a big believer in not skimping on the power supply for phono stages, so I went all out.
- For R5 and R7 (the resistors which dictate the gain in the first stage), I setup a switch so I could switch between resistor values for "high" and "low" gain. For this, there is a 20k resistor that is always in the circuit and another 40K which is shorted when the switch is in the down position. The result is a low gain of about 46db and a high gain of about 55db. I did this to accommodate the cartridges I use at my office which are 4mV and 2mV respectively. I was told it might be noisey with that much gain, but it's still nice and quiet even in the "high" gain mode.
- After getting the OK from Pete, I swapped in a couple of Staccato Discrete Op Amps I had in the second gain stage to see how I liked it. Significantly more weight and impact in the music. I haven't analyzed it too closely, but it's a definite improvement.
I'm not sure how this compares to a 100% stock build, but I am very, very happy with mine.

Sorry, Chromenuts, I thought you were the OP! Thank you for measuring yours! I am trying to make sure I will have enough room on my shelf. It looks like I will.
@jazzzman
I'm attaching a screenshot I made which includes the exact dimensions of my chassis. I'm not sure if it differs from the one the other gentleman posted, but I wanted to make sure.
As far as the op amps, the stock ones are still pretty solid. I happened to have a couple of Staccato ones handy so I decided to try them, but shipping from Poland can make them cost prohibitive if you're only buying a couple. I also tried Sparkos, but they sounded a little thin and strained in this particular application.
