Wel look,

I'm sure this will work. Building a projector is possible... but I want it real budget. To start ...

I bought

A 300 Watts Halogeen bulb for outside use ... 6 Euro in a nice metal box with a glass window ....

One Double plated window (thermal shield for the LCD) 4 euro

A LCD Panel from Velleman (MONCOLAE) with integrated SVideo controller 4" brightness/Contrast/color control and 2 inputs. Backlight removed succes 🙂 93 euro including controller.

I asked like everywhere around to get a projector and I finaly found an old Dia projector ... With a white screen reflecting !!! for about 15 Euro

I recuperated some Hold from the old sleeping room of my mom ... FOR FREE 🙂 Used but who cares.

2 PC Fans one in and one out 8 Euro

1 power supply 12 Volt 25 watts 7 euro

Some wirestuff ... Soryy I had it not Idee Euro

Total Price 133 Euro... I'm building it right now and I'll post imageslater on .

I'm definatly going for this lcd. I sent you an e-mail God_de_Vader. Hope it's possible...

I found a reseller in Norway for the same screen but they are selling them for over 300 euros!

Does the screen have a built in power supply? I suppose it doesn't but the spec sheet implied it:

Specifications

resolution : 383 x 234 dots
screen size : 4" (diag.)
video inputs : 1.0Vpp (composite)
audio input : 1.1Vpp
power supply : DC 12V
power consumption : 6W
dimensions : -
weight : -

i'm very new to all this homemade projector stuff, so a quick question:

Would this screen (4", 383 x 234 resolution) produce the same quality as a 12" screen running at 1149x702 (screen size is 3 times as big, so is resolution)
Suppose it would depend on the actual pixel size right?

Resolution and prices ...

The price I payd is 77 euro exclusiv VAT so that makes 93 euro's all taxes included.

The reolution is kind a low ... I know but as i am a starter I wouldn't rip of an expansive screen. It has the same resolution as a regular PAL / NTSC Screen So for watching DVD's, Movies and playing some games (use it like a playstation or whatever ...) it is good enough.

The power supply is not included but a standard 12 Volt adaptor of some miliamperes is enough. It consumes only 6 Watt if you calculate it :

P = U X I
So I = P/U
So I = 6 / 12
So I = 0,5 Ampere
I Bought a 1 ampere version becaus I will add 2 12 Volt Fans to !!!

If this project works out fine I'll try the same thing with a 15" regular PC monitor and a 1000 Watt halogeen Bulb and maybe an watercooled Window plate between the bulb and the LCD.

However this screen is a recomodation for a starter because it can function well on temperatures of 75 Degrees Celsius. I'm recieving my lens This evening so then the real live testing starts. It will be in Carton boxes and later on in Hold and metal. I spoke today with a Photographer and he proposed to build the Halogene Bulb in to a black (not shynie black but silk black) box and make an window cut that just fits my TFT. Then a glass plate and then my TFT... Then color the rest black inside to. This will avoid inside reflexion so you get a sharper image.

I keep you guys up to date on this project !

Do you think the screen is usable without an extra light source. Verbose built something using only the built in led light source with a partsexpress 4" lcd. I know this wont give superb results, but I'm only using my projector in dark rooms and relatively small screen sizes. So do you think it's doable?

Actually most movie DVDs are recorded at 720*480 pixels in progressive scan mode [film based material], so you will find that the display you are using will only give you about 1/4 the resolution of the best sources available to you.
