My New PSOne 5" LCD Project
Ok Gang.. A complete newbie here.. Learning with every post I read.. But getting ready to try my hands on approach..
Planning on building a projector. Going to try a custom approach and skipping over the whole OHD concept. Going straight for a box.
What I am hoping is that someone can look over these parts I am planning on buying and tell me if I'm nuts.. Thanks in advance.
I am planning on using the box with my Sony PSOne 5" Screen. I've already stripped it, and it is good to go. Distance from the wall will be approx 10 - 11 feet, and I am looking to get about a 60 inch diagonal final viewing image.
OK.. On to the parts...
As far as the case, it will be a custom design. Most likely wood, painted inside and out in Black. Planning on using a stove black paint to help with heat issues.
Also planning on using some standard PC Cooling fans - 120mm style, to get some airflow going in the case. Primarily looking to keep the light and the LCD cool here.
As far as the light engine.. Looking to buy a ballast and bulb from goodmart.com.
Ballast - http://www.goodmart.com/products/433838.htm
Light - http://www.goodmart.com/products/33380.htm
I am pretty sure I need a socket of some sort (is that called a mogul?) Suggestions on where to get one would be great.
Planning on a switch assembly connected to a cut off Extension cable to allow for turning the unit on and off.
On to the optics.
I was planning on using 2 fresnels.. Probably just the 2x magnifying pages from Staples. Could REALLY use some help here.. Are these any good? Is it proper to put one before and one after the LCD? Can I just cut them to size? Not sure of the math here..
And finally the lense. Planning on a 9" From American Science Surplus - http://www.sciplus.com/. Item number is 6907. Specs are
PROJ. LENS, 9.0"
Focal Length - 9"
Speed - F:5.6
BARREL DIA. - 2-11/16"
BARREL LENGTH - 3-1/4"
Other than the Socket / mogul am I missing anything? I am going to test the PSone Controller board to see if I can draw power from it to power my cooling fans. Also, thinking of adding a polished Soup Ladle as a reflector...
Thanks for taking a look and for comments. I promise to grab some pics as she is being built and of the finsished product. Thanks again!

those page magnifiers work pretty decent so dont worry.
if you buy a 400w ballast you must buy a 400w bulb. what you might want to do is look locally. you can usually get it for the same price and exclude the shipping.
i have that 9" fl lens. its pretty good.
oh yeah and the mogul base, try to get that locally too. they are pretty cheap.

Hiya part2wanksta!
I saw the threads on your design.. Impressive stuff. I'm just looking forward to firing this bad boy up!
When you say locally, I assume you don't mean Home Depot.. Are you thinking of a n electrical suplly shop? Mom and Pop deal? Or are there chains?
This lens that I am looking at.. How far is your situated from the PSone screen? I was looking at one with a 4.5 inch diameter that looks like it would cover the entire screen. Should I go that route?
Also, does this lens have any focus adjustments on it? Did you get it from the same site? How long did it take to arrive?
I am thinking about using a 500w Halogen floodlight during my intital testing to build the light drive.. Any ideas on how to dissipate the heat? I'll use Lexan to block the UV, but I'm still confused on the cold mirror.. Do you place the mirror between the light and the LCD? Or does the light point to the back of the box and bounce off the Cold mirror back to the LCD? HELP! Ack!
Thanks for the reply and sorry for all the questions!

i havent used a cold mirror. but i think that the light goes to the cold miror and then to your lcd.

Think I'll go with that one.. Also, do you use a piece of Lexan Glass for UV filtration?
