I got a OHP in the mail today from good ole Ebay. Its a dukane 4003 and it uses 410W FXL bulbs. I am going to throw my 15" monitor on it, and was thinking about ordering a 150W Metal Halide kit, to save heating issues, a brighter image, and whiter light. Do you think this is possible with my type of OHP?? I only have seen retrofits with people using overheads like a Elmo Solar Delux, where the light source is directly beneath the lens. Mine is a traditional horizontal Halogen - to reflecting mirror - to lens setup. I was hoping to take the entire lighting system out and put the MH bulb in its place, but then I thought, wouldnt the MH bulb have to be in EXACTLY the same position to get a correct image from the reflection on the mirror?
I assume it is only feasible with a 150W single ended bulb, thats probably the only one to fit?
Example:
MH bulb
And an electronic ballast and a reflector..
I think this would be so perfect if i can get it to fit, the OHP has a 12" fresnel already modded in it so my monitor should fit pretty nicely compared to my old OHP.
I want to try it really badly, but dont know if I should spend the money on something not even possible to fit in there. Any comments, a push in the right direction? Thanks

UPDATE!: I'm saying WTF, try it!
I am getting a 250W MH double ended and seeing if I can put it into my OHP, Ill post pics and reults when I get it done!

Good thing you went for the 250 double ended, The 150W you were planning to use is much to large.
You should try to fit the 250W between your condensor lens and reflector (if you have both).
If you cant you'll get a 'less than optimal' picture.
If you have a dremel you can grind some of edged of the reflector to gain just that little bit of space to cram the bulb in there.
My ohp (and ywh's one) use the same setup so its a proven way.
Good luck.
ps: if you have an ohp without a condesor lens and a reflector than get one b4 you start. It will save you a lot off time/money as you'll need them both.

My OHP isnt direct lighting
Well u see, I never saw any mods on the type of OHP I have, its the mirror reflecting variety, I included a pic i had to whip up in a minute since my camera is being borrowed. I have enough room to wire a MH bulb in the area where the assembly for the 2 Halogen bulbs used to be, and I was going to place it in the same spot with a relfector to reflect more light to the mirror.
Think I can pull it off.....I think I can! I think I can!

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
I was looking in the proj, and with the tight spaces, Will the MH bulb run too hot and like melt the insides of the projector?? Ihave a 80mm fan inside that thing for when I install the MH bulb which I assume will run much cooler than my 410W Halogen. Thoughts?
BTW, I am still wondering, has anyone retrofitted this type of factory projector or am i the first here to try? (and probably melt or break something!)

The Metal halide is MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH cooler usually when I take panels off the 410w FXL overhead I have they are almost too hot to hold, But the MH was just slightly warm. But If all else fails put more fans in the OHP. good luck
