You will encounter a wide range of opinion. If it were me, I'd be looking at an EL84-based push pull amp in the 10-15 watt class. Easy to experiment on, low distortion, MUCH less fiddly about details of parts and construction than single-ended gear... I don't know any kits offhand (that's not what I do), but I'll bet a few minutes of Googling will turn up some candidates. You won't bring down the plaster with 10 watts, but if it's a competent design, it will sound quite nice cranked to a pretty good level.
