the confusing DIR...
Hi mwp!
nice work, sometime ago I ordered almost the same parts...
Badly, I haven´t found the time to realize the DAC....
oh man, the guy who wrote the datasheet of the DIR1703 probably doesn´t know anything about it... some kind of extreme confusing this thing....
my question: I plan to use it with my Terratec Aureon as source and therefore fs varies (44.1kHz, 48kHz, sometimes 96kHz).
From all what I have been able to read out of the datasheet, the DIR uses the Crystal only when S/PDIF is inactive.... what should that mean? why didn´t they only mute the output when the signal is absent? I also read that it is able to upsample data? Can anyone confirm this? and how do I realize this?
And at last: How does the PCM1730 sound? I got some nice AD8620 and AD8007 that I will use for I/V... thank AD
Many Q´s... I know... I will ask TI to pay the man who can explain the DIR1703 a lot of money ;-)

Re: the confusing DIR...
Yeh, hopeless isnt it.
It was kinda a big guess at the design i used.
Although i had looked at nearly every other DIR1703 using DAC i could find on the net.
The DIR1703 has 2 modes... it can either always use the crystal or only use it when required.
If its set to always use it, then your SPDIF input will always need to be at the corresponding rate.
In the other mode (the one i use), itll use the crystal to create the clock when no SPDIF signal is present.
When a SPDIF signal is present, itll use a PLL to take the clock signal from that instead.
This is what you want as the DIR1703 then will sync to any source rate (well 32Khz to 96Khz is its range).
Even though it wont be using the crystal while the SPDIF signal is present, the crystal still must be in the circuit, and be of the correct value.
Well to me the PCM1730 DAC sounds real good... a big improvment over the SantaCruz soundcard i was using.
Besides that, i dont have anything to compare it to 🙁
Me??? 😉
BTW... whats the Aureon like?
I am thinking about getting one.
The stats of it sound impressive, but what are the drivers like?
Ive been burned far too many times by good soundcards with hopeless driver support before 🙁

better you go for an m-audio revolution: better dac´s, much better drivers.... even creative drivers are way better (imho)
=>with reprogramming the eeprom it is possible to use the drivers from the audiotrak prodigy, wich are supposed to have better driver support....
and: I love my sblive! more than ever.... sound quality isn´t very good, but I love the DSP! and with kx-driver it is really cool to play with...
to the sound of my aureon: it´s not that bad, but compared to my TDA1541A DAC it hasn´t really a chance ;-) I dont´like those CODEC things where everything is integrated....
cheers!
to the DIR1703: so is it more or less unimportant wich listed crystal I use? (11,2 or 12,288MHz) for all fs?

Well im not really concerned about DAC quality of soundcards anymore as thats what im using my DAC for.
But i would like a card that doesnt resample and had 96Khz 24bit support, hance why the Aureon looked interesting.

Yeh, either would be ok, as long as you then setup the DIR1703 to that crystal rate (BRSEL).

ok, I didn´t had a thought on that you´re using the external DAC ;-)
But I would consider to get the M-Audio Revolution, from all what I heared it´s the best of all Envy24HT cards...
Are you using Toslink or coaxial input...
that might be the only fact that puts the aureon back, but thats easy to implement by yourself...
Why no Audigy 2? It supports direct S/PDIF output with no resampling and you can use the coolest drivers ever: KXproject
IMHO Creative cards are the "best buy" if you take the component costs...

I prefer optical from the PC to give isolation.
Easy enough to convert from Coax if i have to tho.... its what im doing at the moment.

I thought the Audigy2 resamples?
Anyway.... i wont buy anything Creative makes on principle.... they are an evil company.
Well I've studied a lot and I know a lot more. Well first of all this is not my first DIY project I've also build some speakers and some little electronics.
But I was hoping someone of you could post a schematic of all the wiring connections. That would really help me. Lots of thanks

Ok well I have finished the PCB design for the use of the DIR1703 the PCM1902 and two PCM1794's in Dual mono.
Now all I have to do is etch the board and order all the bits, 85caps
and 45 resistors
.
With a total of about 450 holes to drill, Im really looking forward to that
I have a TEAC d1 DAC to compare this too. Im hoping the PCM1794 will outperform it, it should do I would imagine if everything works as spec'ed by TI. That and the TEAC is archaic as DACS go. My Uni has a PCB manufacturing plant and according to the person I spoke to, all I have to do is give them the design and they do everything, well we will see
. I would like to drill it tho as I know where all the holes go even tho I dont exactly think they will try and drill a surface mount tab I would like to make sure. 400+ hole tho mite let them d it, if thats the deal. Anway Ill report back when there is more to say.

Well here I am again.
Could someone please post a schematic or a clear pic of his power supply so I can use it as a reference.
Many thanks
