Well following on from my other thread I have made the finishing touches to my DIY passive subwoofer - I have just finished painting it matt black, and it's in the process of drying!
Whilst I wait for it to dry, here are a few pictures of the SPLX 12" driver I am using:
More pictures will follow.
Anyone got any ideas of a name I could use for it? It's hexagonally shaped.
🙄

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

It's finished!!
Paint was totally dry this morning, and all that was left to do was screw in the driver and connection plate, and voila!
I managed to lug the huge thing in here to take photos for you guys! (This thing is heavy!)
So here are some photos of the finished product:
Apologies for no "construction photos" as I don't have a digital camera, only this slightly crap webcam on my PC.
Anyways, what do you think? First ever DIY speaker, and I think it sounds excellent! Much better than the £150 cheap ones you can buy anyway!
🙂

Well to be honest, I didn't entirely build it.
I bought the driver and enclosure from eBay. The enclosure was quite poorly made in some places, but I overall liked the shape so decided to just work on it, sanding off dodgy edges, filling in the gaps, etc. A good weekend's work though, and it looks very nice sitting in my bedroom. You can hear it right down to about 26 Hz. Any lower and the floor just vibrates! 🙂

*imagines putting salsa in the woofer, then cranking it...*
OKAY FOLKS! I'm sold on it! I'm going to steal my mom's aluminium salad bowl and make a woofer out of it!

The S4 - Sexy Six-Sided Subwoofer
Or continuing on the same line of thought - the Squattro. You'll know that it means S-quattro, for the name presented above, but others will think it's got something to do with squatting 🙂

Howard,
If this is your only sub project what are you going to do with the other drivers I see in your photo?

Passive?
Did you mean sealed instead of passive? Did you have to add bracing at the hexgonal joints?

Hehe those name suggestions are rather good.
And it's both sealed and passive 😉
I added some bracing to the sides of the panels and the joints to stop any resonance yes, but not much. However the fact that when I play a 35Hz sinewave through it, the only thing that resonates annoyingly is the window above my door, that can only be a good thing! 😎
Edit:
The other drivers are midrange PA power drivers (see my other thread). One is damaged, the other works fine. Not sure what I'm going to do with those yet!
