My a40 finally completed

What a gripping headline, huh? I know its not as sexy as all of the Aleph-Xs going on around here, but its finally finshed!

Since I couldn't have done it without the help and support of everyone here, a big "Thank you!" to everyone, especially Nelson! I started it over 2 years ago and have been slowly working on it ever since. I never imagined how much I would learn or how much I would curse when that damn hum (which is finally gone) persisted in my speakers, or how much time I'd spend reading this forum...

I am very pleased with its performance and while it was not constructed with the precision of machined aluminum (I'll get there one day, Peter😉 ) it looks decent from the outside.

Photos of the amp and construction notes here.

Thanks again everyone! My next project is a small pair of bookshelf speakers to go with the a40 and then I'm off to populate my Aleph-X boards...

very nice!!! 🙂

i like the look of the front ... very simple
i like the look of the wood .. some of my old furniture was like that, so i'm used to it 🙂

i think it looks very nice .. it doesn't look massive, because of wood and hidden heatsinks, so that's a bonus (sometimes)
glad you finally finished it

Thanks for your comments!

I wanted to use wood for ease of construction the first time around and when I found this wood already pre-finished and nearly free - it was a no brainer. In the close-up of the PCBs you can see a few of my "spare" holes that were drilled at one time or another in an attempt to try out various configurations and reduce interference. One more piece of wood that matches the front panel goes on top and hinges to the back panel of the amp, so I can raise it like a hood if I need to do work. When its closed, there is a small air gap around the edge to keep hot air from accumulated inside.

The main design goal for the appearce was simplicity. I wanted it to look clean and neat from the front so only 2 LEDs which doubled as spot lights until I tamed them down a little!

The heatsinks are 0.67 c/w each, a total of 0.083c/w for the entire amp. The bias is very close to what it should be and the temperature rise is 23c. You can comfortably leave your hand on them indefinitely after they have warmed up.
