I did a VERY minor mod today. I used a household 40 watt lamp i positioned it over the OHP reflector and and closed the top over the cord. when i turned it on is looked pretty kool but when i put my LCD panel over it THATS where it loses alot of light, but considering the image can be seen on a MEASELY 40 WATT BULB im very anxious to try a reduced jack MH setup. by NO means was the 40 watt enough but it looked "OK" im wondering how SWEETROBOT's OHP mod failed. I think in order to get a good OHP retrofit the OHP must not be changed in any way everything should be as normal as possible only thing that should be changed are the lighting this is what ROLM did and i think thats why he was succesful.
I will buy an MH setup soon but im not sure which is best, I am happy with my current Brightness im afraid a 400 watt will be too bright maybe i will go the 250 watt route.

Good to hear....
Glad you're on the right track. First off, depending on your screen size (mine is a 15" diag.- leaving a 12.5" horizontal length), one may need to mod the size of the stage so az to reveal the entire fresnel on the horizontal- which is 12". I can live without the .25" on either side. The vertical is not a problem, and does not need cutting. In my case, I have the reduced jacket MH @ 400w, and it fits snugly where the original lights were. However, I removed the entire section containing bulb brightness, fan, and switch- basically, the only plastic parts other than the cover- all the rest is metal. I am actually still using the fan which came with the projector as it can suck a damn good volume of air and it still fits nicely next to th bulb. In most cases, you will need to remove the internal components section when retroing the standard MH. The ballast can easily be placed behind the mirror, or right next to it so as not to obstruct the light reflex. I don't know how it is in your case, but my projector doesn't use a condensor lens system, it just reflects light directly from the bulb. So, perhaps not enough light was making it efficiently to the fresnel- i am certain this is my prob. I will post some detailed pics of how I had things tonight.

my OHP doesnt have a condensor lens either. I think in order for the light to be reflected fully the bulb head or bulb "BALL" has to be positioned in or near the middle of the built in OHP relector. i've noticed this and i see that the DYS bulb's "BALL" area was directly in the middle of the relector and about an inch or so above the reflector if we can emulate this i think it will work
Im wondering where you guys got your 12"x12" fresnels. I have one from a 3m 9550 and its 11.25 by 11.25, so if someone could tell me the maker. model # of a 12x12 stage ohp. thanks
hi goldmoth
i dont think there are any 12"x12" ohp's
if you look at sweetrobot's post #2 he is saying he moded the stage to achieve the 12" i also did this on my 3m 9800 but you need a bigger fresnel
i am using one from an elmo a305sd ohp
but u loose a very small portion of the active area on the lcd
i have orderd a new fresnel that is supposed to display the whole lcd but i havent recieved it yet i will post a review on this fresnel when i get it
look at the pic below so you can get an idea how to mod your ohp
for the 15" lcd
hope this helps

**PROJECT UPDATE**
I am VERY happy to report that my experiments are going VERY well. I moved up from 40 watts to 60 to 100 watts. the 60 watt wasnt very different from the 40 the image never the less was VERY suprising, the image was nice it looked like a tv projecor,NOW the 100 watter blew me away, i could read text i see CLEARLY and everything but due to the positioning of the bulb the light didnt shine evenly on all four sides i think this can be fixed but im not going to change the insides of my OHP in ANY way, because i ordered some bulbs for it last week, but I STILL havent recieved them so this mod will help me till they get here.
The 100 watt bulb gets hot so i will turn on OHP fan later when im watching it on a screen. I hope more ppl will try this, im still amazed and excited that this REALLY works!!!! the 60 watt bulbs is ONLY 750 lumens of white light, i dont know about the 100 watter but i DO know it gives off YELLOW light and there is ABSOLUTELY NO diference with my DYS bulb which gives off white light,im not sure why this worked so well.. im now thinking of maybe using 175 watt or higher watt incandescants.
Im in the process of looking for a camera when i find a good one i will upload pix.

depending on how the mirror is positioned, the light has to be centered so as to be reflected to the center of the fresenel, meaning it doesn't necessarily have to be in the center of the mirror. However, i'm planning on taking out the mirror- one screw- and placing the bulb directly beneath the fresnel. i realize it will get extremely hot, but just for a quick test with a fan will do. I will also place aluminum foil covered panels to form a spherical trapezoid to trap the light around the bulb and onto the fresenel. how exactly did u position your bulb neg. design? did u place it directly beneath as i plan on doing, or are you emulating the original design? i will do some tweaking tonite. as for the lens, it is 12"x12", though i think there is a border of .25", leaving 11.5" for projection. Wish me luck, and luck goes to all with this.

it wont damage the fresnel since its no way NEAR as hot as the 600 watt halogen. my OHP doesnt have a mirror inside.what position? well i dont have a concrete position im trying to find a "suitable" spot. i 1st placed it on the side of the reflector trying to keep the bulb ball as centered as possiblei will later put it on top of reflector.
during my lunch break 🙂 i came up with a plan to use TWO bulbs, after im done with my meal i will update and let you know how it goes.

P.S. Good Luck 🙂

OK, i tried using TWO bulbs- 100 and 60 watts it was WORSE, well long story short i belive only one bulb can be used to retrofit and this 100 watt bulbs is NOT it, and i didnt expect it to be, this is just an experiment.
I just recieved my DYS bulbs i wll be buying a 250 watt MH setup after these bulbs r fried.
NOW, besides the lighting and heat i have ANOTHER problem...
this OHP is not a great as i thouht it was yes its bright and all but this thing is a BITCH to focus 🙁 it is incrediblly hard to keep straight not the the OHP itself but the projected image. i think i may have to buy another lens or something... does any one have any ideas on how i can fix this or an idea at all?
Thanks
Jimmy

I fixed the focus problem all i needed to do is place the OHP in the middle of the screen's view... 🙂 🙂 🙂
now all i need to to find a way to blockout the sunlight ......any ideas😉

a cheap solution-
Use a blanket- lol. worked while i was testing. Either that, or a solar blanket which will do nicely. also, i had a litle bit of a tragedy- check my post - http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10736
not to worry, i'll be getting back up asap!
btw, are you using an lcd from a monitor, or an actual panel for ohp?

Yeah, Glad to see your one the right course too, and I give you credit for trying something different when you started (even though we tried to tell you), If your happy now, just wait till you put in the MH lamp, I've got a spectra c with a 575MH, and it looks great, but of course now I want to upgrade to an LCD Monitor. How big are you projecting? Get some pics if you can.
my picture sizes vary, while projecting in my room its 46" high and 56" wide, but on my DIY screen its 57" high and 77" wide 90" diagonal. i can project WAY larger but..i learned this after i built my screen..lol. I think my setup is GREAT but only for movies, TV looks good but PC divx movies looks AMAZING! especially on my DIY screen. Im borrowing my cuz's X-box this weekend i hope to get positive results. This is just the beginning i plan to get a montior too ....after i get a job 😀 lol
im currently lookin for a digital cam when i get one i will post pix.
Btw..do you have pix?
ThanX

I bought an lcd pj
Well, I kinda bought myself a used pj for 500 bucks. its a bit busted, i have to test it out to see what works- got it as is- it was dropped.
here are the specs- http://www.shophiq.com/lvp-x300u.html

WOW..
this projector is worth every penny, at 2000lumens and a native res of 1024x768! There is no damage to the projection- just the case is cracked at a rear corner. the one setback is the replacement lamp cost at about 300 bucks. each hour costs me approx. 30 cents- seems ok looking at it that way. if i only put 30 cents in a jar for every hour.... but not gonna happen. when it burns out, i'm gonna try to retro a small halide by my own means- try to get one of those 60 halides.

My Second OHP Mod
i didnt wanna start a new thread so im continuing this one...
any who, i just got an old OHP from my skool ( a crappy one) this OHP has very little use to me...but it has a condensor lense and 2 projection lenses 🙂 ...im not sure how i can use the 2 lenses but im currently using the condensor lens from it. And im not sure if i inserted it right... the projected image looks a bit blurry but the image has been magnified more thus increasing the overall Contrast ratio.
yes its a bit blurry if u REalLY look at it, and this is while watchin TV i havent tried it with pc yet.im sure its better with VGA...we'll have to see...
Im still thinking about buying an MH setup, Reduced jacket (which is smaller) i have the money...but im unsure if it will work...so im hoping some one has some ideas...
