Musically Dynamic sounding Preamplifier

I am looking to build a Musically Dynamic sounding preamplifier, any suggestions or directions are welcome.

Is it suggested to go with tube or Solid State state preamp would sound good ?

For me the preamp is the only place where valves are indispensable. It is also the trickiest part of a system to get right.

Out of context, no good advice is possible. There is no unqualified best.

I recently heard a 6550 pp high power valve power amp, and I am wondering if they are also indispensable here.
