Mullard 3-3 . The more unknown versions

This schematic are most likely a earlier version of the well known mullard 3-3 amplifier using different tubes than the the later version we all know real well (EF86-EL84) . This version uses EF40 as the pretube and EL41 as power output tube.

Enjoy 🙂

Btw . There is a third version of the schematic too that uses EF36 or EF37(A) and EL33. But i have not found a schematic yet on this version.

Hi satyrian,
Unfortunately that is not a version of the Mullard 3-3 (EF86/EL84) design, sorry.
That is a standard capacitor (C5) coupled SE 3 watt amp circuit. With the EF40 grid 2 powered from the HT+ (B+).
The Mullard 3--3 is directly coupled (no cap between the EF86 and EL84) and the EF86 is used in 'starvation' mode with grid 2 is powered at low voltage from the EL84 cathode. As mentioned before, more complicated than it looks.
There is a basic operation description here: Mullard 3-3. Three Watt Amplifier

This is a 3 tube 3 watt amplifier schematic made by mullard.. This schematic date years earlier than before the EF86-EL84 . same with the other schematic i mensioned. But its not the same type of schematic as the EF86-EL84 one. Thats correct. I think they came up a new 3 watt 3 tube schematic with the EF86-EL84 just to show what their new model tubes could do. And because the tubes used in the schematic i posted and the other one i mensioned was not so popular anymore and was dropping in sales . It was a Good sales trick . Because there are few schematics that are so well known as the last one. The EF86-EL84 🙂

Thanks for sharing.
The history of amplifiers is very interesting.

It always amazes me that a company like Mullard can design an amplifier so complex which only produces 3 Watts.

Of course, all those parts makes it look like the design must be wonderful, so many choose to build it, using Mullard tubes.
That is a great sales tool.

But all that complexity prevents me from building one.

Your Mileage May Vary.

That amplifier is easily scaled up for more power by any experienced experimenter. So you can stop being amazed today.😀

A 3 Horsepower gas engine can be scaled up too.
How many 300 Horsepower gas engines are simply a scaled up version of the 3 horsepower gas engine?
Any experienced experimenter may choose to do that.

Not my preference, but go right ahead, have at it.
