Hi everyone,
I spend most of my time in the Loudspeaker sections. I want to set up a front projector for a friend and have what might be a silly question about the setup.
The projector is going to be ceiling mounted and can be placed any distance from the front wall (to get the screen size we're looking for).
Is it better to place the projector as far back as necessary to get the screen size we're looking for, or is it better to place the projector closer and use the zoom on the lens to enlarge the screen size, or does it not matter, six of one half dozen of another.
I thank you in advance for your help, and if this was a silly question I hope you got a good laugh out of it (as you send me an answer of course).
Thanks & Best

Personally, and by no means do I call myself an expert, I would position it as close to the screen as you possibly could and still get the image quality you desire. This isn't really based on any math, but simply to try and keep people from walking through the image, bumping the projector, etc etc.
One thing I can think of though to show how it'd work on the distance vs zoom is take a flashlight with an adjustable beam into a dark room and walk too and from a wall and look at how well the flashlight performs at various distances/focus. I wouldn't call it a perfect representation though, maybe shine the flashlight through a transparency/slide would be a more proper effect and pretty simple to do.
Perhaps somebody else will come through with a better idea that doesn't involve just trial and error with the projector? 😛 I know the mid-range ones we have at the office tend to get pretty poor the farther away from the screen they sit, even trying to use the autofocus on the projector.
