Mounting of IR receiver diode

Hi guys, I have just added infra red volume control to my preamp (lower unit in picture http://novelbooks.weebly.com/camm-equitone-preamplifier.html )
and was wondering how I should mount the infra red diode as their shape doesn't help matters. Any ideas?

That's a complete receiver, diode, amplifier and filters. They are usually very sensitive so just a small hole that accommodates the lens part may be enough.

(The filter part of the receiver is fixed, 36 and 38Khz are common from memory, and should match the remote transmission freq for optimum sensitivity).

Two choices 🙂

Drill a small hole and rebate the rear to allow the receiver to fit. Epoxy into place.

Or make the receiver an external satellite plug in device, or at least have the cable to it exiting on the rear panel.

What else is on your panel? What is often done in commercial receivers is to put it behind the plastic window on the front. That is usually darkened/smoked or colored, so the hole the part watches through will not be easily seen. And since the part sees infrared rather than more visible light, an area of dark red or infrared color plastic will look black to the eye, but be transparent to the IR beam.

For IR windows, I've always used the button from a gel filled crimp connector that's used on phone cables.

Pop the button out, remove the metal crimp bar, give it a clean and add a hole to the front panel.
