Hi guys, I have just added infra red volume control to my preamp (lower unit in picture http://novelbooks.weebly.com/camm-equitone-preamplifier.html )
and was wondering how I should mount the infra red diode as their shape doesn't help matters. Any ideas?

That's a complete receiver, diode, amplifier and filters. They are usually very sensitive so just a small hole that accommodates the lens part may be enough.
(The filter part of the receiver is fixed, 36 and 38Khz are common from memory, and should match the remote transmission freq for optimum sensitivity).

I was hoping someone has used this one before and found a way of mounting it so that it looks neat and professional, remember I will be drilling through the wooden faceplate.
Two choices 🙂
Drill a small hole and rebate the rear to allow the receiver to fit. Epoxy into place.
Or make the receiver an external satellite plug in device, or at least have the cable to it exiting on the rear panel.

What else is on your panel? What is often done in commercial receivers is to put it behind the plastic window on the front. That is usually darkened/smoked or colored, so the hole the part watches through will not be easily seen. And since the part sees infrared rather than more visible light, an area of dark red or infrared color plastic will look black to the eye, but be transparent to the IR beam.
That's kind of what I was thinking but need to find a suitable plastic lens, will have to keep my eyes peeled on toys etc, that I can vandalize - he he he, revenge will be sweet.
I have the receiver on my amp behind the front panel with just a 4 mm or so hole in the front. It works perfectly even from my listening position which is probably 45 degrees offset from the amp.
I found some of these marbles that are used in mosaics, they are flat at the bottom and I will drill a recess with a flat blade drill bit and after drilling a 4 mm hole through the wood face, glue them in.

Yes I think so. I was looking at a friends mosaic work when I saw these marbles, I have decided to go with a greeny silver one which will match the green power on led, will post photos when done.
Make sure its transparent to IR before drilling holes 🙂 It probably is.
He, he, he, I can hold the receiver diode tightly in my hand and still it picks up the signal through my fingers 😱
