Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a few days so thought I'd better say hello.

Just bought a Crafter electro acoustic guitar and having no amp my thoughts went to the old Mullard 5 10 which has been in the attic for 18yrs.

That's only because my old dad was keen on DIY electronics and when he went to that big hobby room in the sky I inherited the stuff I gave him about 40 yrs ago. This also included the 1960 edition of Mullard Circuits for Audio Amps and a couple of solid state 50W amps he built, one's a Mullard and the other a design by Edward Cherrry an Aussie guy.

I'm now 62 with a bit of spare time so anyway the 5 10 amp and 3v preamp are in the garage on the bench and I'm investigating the possibility of using said amp for guitar work. So the plan is if the transformers ok to refurb amp and build ino a cabinet with suitable drive unit as a practice amp.

I've got an old dual beam Philips scope with one probe which may come in handy but haven't used one since did my HNC in electronics in 1971 so a bit rusty.

I bought a new digital multimeter from Maplin and found the soldering iron so I suppose no going back now.

I've a few valves but looking for 2 x ECC83, 1 x EL84.

The amp has partridge transformers O/P is P4014 wired for distributed loading don't know about the Mains yet. I measured the dc resistance results thus: primary winding A1-A2 = 341ohms, secondary 1.2ohms but read of figures like anode to anode 6.6k and 8k ohms, so a bit confused here, maybe transf kapput.

Interestingly, to me anyhow, the guy I bought the guitar from used to build mullard valve amps and as we spoke out came a copy of the same old Mullard book so I guess I'll be back there soon.

Any tips for refurb would be most welcome.

Mike

Hi Mike and welcome to diyAudio! 🙂 I'm not a valve guy myself (have been afraid of them ever since getting a nasty jolt from one) but there are plenty here who are!

Sounds like an excellent project to get your feet wet with 🙂

Tony.
