Hi guys!
I've a question about this famous full range driver (Monacor SP-205/8).
Is its S.P.L equivalent to 94 dB/1W or to 92 dB/1W?
The official specifications say 94 dB, but someone in some forum (probably a german hi-fi forum , but I'm not sure) insisted that the correct S.P.L. of this driver was 92 dB/1W, so...since I'm a newbie I'm confused🙁
I hope you can give me a correct reply about this mistery!😉
By the way, my friends, I've a pair of old speakers cabinet, they aren't big at all...they're 15 liters at max.
Could I use these vintage wooden speakers cabinets with theses Monacor full ranges, removing the back cover of the cabinets?🙂
I hope so much you can help me with your precious knowledge.
Thnak you for the patience!😉
Regards from italy

I'm afraid it's not a 'famous' driver. It's not actually very well known at all, and probably won't be due to the lack of useful data and extremely high Fs.
Unfortunately, without seeing the frequency response data, it's not possible to say which of those values could be considered more accurate.

As noted, without having the actual response data, we can't. What we can say is this: no driver has a completely flat response; there is always some variation over their operating range, and this is also affected by how the measurements were taken. Different equipment and techniques can give different results. Nor is there a fixed requirement for how you state a single numeric SPL value. Some people use the point of highest output over its operating range. Some use whatever the output happens to be at a particular frequency. Some use average output over a specific range of frequencies; some use the average over the entire range. They all give different values, and without having the actual response data, they don't really mean a great deal.

Sadly, without any usable data, we can't say. Perhaps. It's almost certain you will have very little bass output -the driver isn't capable of it and a 15 litre open back box isn't capable of generating any more either. It might be OK apart from that. Or it might not.

i fully agree with Scottmouse,
it is better to built first a well known concept, than you cant test your ideas and compair.
needle, tabac, mark audio, woden design etc.
your driver is not a hit, try another were data are published.

The Monacor SP-205/8 is well known in Germany and probably also in other european countries. The FR does, in fact, do 94dB/1W/1m. The 92dB was measured at 2,83V but the SP-205/8 isn't actually an 8 Ohm driver, it's more like a 10 Ohm one, so the measurement at 2,83V took place at less than 1W.
Aside from that, you'll realize the high spl is reached from the upper mid on up only.
Monacor's products are used in a lot of speakers, and many are very good. However, Monacor is a company, and this is about a specific driver.
Re Falcon's LS3/5a, they used to recommend a Monacor unit as a replacement midbass. However, to the best of my knowledge they commissioned a brand new run of the KEF B110 (SP1003) and T27 drivers and that is what they use in their complete & kit LS3/5a offerings.

That I know, having made a brief search as the OP didn't provide any links. As for K+T, while a useful publication, not everybody the world over subscribes, or has easy access to it & its records. The fact is this is not an especially well known or popular driver in a global sense amongst home DIY speaker builders. It might be more so if Monacor provided some data themselves, as they do for many of their other products. Although with an Fs in the 90Hz - 100Hz region & a total Q of ~2.7 (not counting any series R in the circuit or amplifier output impedance), I doubt it would be wildly popular.
All of which is merely confirmation that the combination of this unit with the 15 litre open back box mentioned by the OP above is likely to provide results that suck like a Dyson faced with a cricketball & 30ft of garden hose. 😉

It is marketed as a "universal driver", so something to mount in machines, ceilings, maybe replace some rotten drivers in old radios and such. It's not supposed to be well known. I have no personal experience, but it is described as a Saba Greencone with treble, and ascribed a classic tube radio driver sound. Because of its price, it lends itself to modification experiements (little lost after failure) and the most basic enclosures. I know some hobby guys that tried it out, they all did more with it than intended, because it surprised and amused them.
Some of the better known drivers will be a step up, then again some of the more expensive drivers even better, then the exotics... Etc. Depends on goals and budget.
I think we all have access to a lot more than we think. We are limited by our known query terms, that's why I love hanging out on fora to learn more and get better words. The best words! ;-)
