A little intro, I spent 22 years in the USN, and in my early days I had one of the first stereos in the barracks..A Heathkit transistor model. I miss that company, but you could buy it from Sansui and others cheaper than you could make it as soon as Japan geared up in the consumer electronics world. My last Heathkit drove a pair of Altec Lansing Valencia speakers that impressed most.
Unfortunately, the noise of the Navy took a big bite out of the middle of my hearing, and I needed to crank that system up to the point of pain to really enjoy it.
After retiring from the Nav, I worked for a Govt. contractor building Megawatt-class RADAR transmitters. It was fun, it was high voltage, and it was, and still is vacuum tubes. Now having retired from BAE Systems, I have time for some DIY electronics, and tonight finished my first project, an O2 headphone amp.
I am listening to Reggae Cowboy through it as I type this.
I built my O2 stock, but put it in the large option case. I have the 1/4 inch headphone jack on the front and the power inlet and RCA input jacks on the back. The stock O2 1/8 inch input jack serves as a switch, disconnecting the rear jacks when it is used. My cans are a Christmas present from my wife this year, Audio-technica ATH M 50's. Given my hearing, they may never need upgrading.
My next project (actually already started) is adding a SPDIF output to my Sony HBD E570 surround sound so I can pipe it under the floor to my favorite couch. Following that, I will build a decoder and DAC. I have found what appears to be a sound series of designs at pavouk.org. I have begun ordering parts for a DIR9001 decoder and a NOS DAC with ten TDA1543's.
