Modulus-86 Subjective Sound Character vs "Default" LM3886 Implementation?

Hi ryansupak!

I've build a composite LM3886 amp too (some years ago), basically very similar to Tom's circuit. It's a hybrid design, with tht and smd components. On the pic you see my prototypes.

For the quality, I can say the composite version sounds more airy, very detailed and dynamic. Highs are not sot sharp, but pleasant. A kind of easy to listen to for a long time...😉 The simple LM3886 (in comparison) has a little more "body" but not so clear and a some "fuzzy".

But the sound quality (not measured values!), depends on the implementation and choice of components, as always. You should apply ONLY as much capacitance in the feedback and phase compensation as necessary for a stable operation. These caps are quality sensitive parts! Actually I use it with polystyrene types, but a good C0G (class1) ceramics can be a choice too. Simply experiment with that. There are some resistors too with recommended higher quality, and of course the error correction opa. I'll try with OPA827, if I get my single SOIC to DIP8 adapter (according to simulation I do not need to change the compensation).

Have fun!

Anyway, if you order it from Tom, you can not make anything wrong! 😉
