Modifying a digital receiver for DVI-D out

This is turning out even more complicated. Even if I have dvi out from the digital receiver I still need to run it through my htpc to upscale so that means I need a video card with dvi input or is that a tuner card? Hmmmm....
Sounds too much trouble.

To tell you the truth, I don't think what you're trying to do is possible. You can't keep the signal digital because the output from the sattelite box is Coax, wich is analog. I doubt it's possible, or at any rate feasible to modify it to output diretly to DVI. I would suggest just getting some good quality coax cable and running it from the sattelite box to a TV Card in your PC. Really, what you're trying to do is just a lot of work for nothing. Running it through a TV Card in your pc and then to your display will produce superb results, I've tried it with my friend's sattelite box.

I believe Hauppauge also makes a card for watching sattelite directly on a PC, called the "Nexus," Although I know nothing about it, where to get it, or how it works.

Foget about DVI. Your wasting your time. Not only is there no way to get a DVI output on a non-HD satellite STB, there's no way to input DVI into a computer other than buying a VERY expensive ($8000 and up) DVI frame grabber.

There are companies that will add an SDI (serial diigital interface) output to a DVD player and might do it for a STB. With non-HD SDI, you can input that to your computer if you buy a Holo3Dgraph I card. The card costs $400 or so and also has non-HD analog component inputs.

The other option is to buy an older HD RCA Directv STB and pay 169time.com to install a firewire output. They charge like $1500 or some ridiculous amount.

How about this to get the digital signal into my pc pure digital?

Co'mon man. That's the daughtercard for the MyHD card. That allows MyHD owners with DVI video cards to loop their computer signal through the HD tuner card's DVI OUTPUT. There is no DVI input whatsoever.

I'd like to have a DVI input on my computer for $89 too, but it just not a reality.

Like I said, forget about DVI. No offense, but judging from what you've written, I think it's safe to say that your not very familiar with video capture and your fantasizing about a straight digital capture w/o any experience or knowledge as to what the real world benefits are. It sounds great on paper, but the real world benefits are not significant and I doubt you would notice. If anything, capturing 480i signals using analog capture cards is better because you can use dscaler to improve the picture and give you more control over it.

So before you go and spend over $1000 just to capture some crappy 480i video digitally, ask yourself why it's such a big deal and what benefits you'll really see.

You realize that non-HD satellite broadcasts are originally analog right? Directv or Dish converts it to digital and compresses it quite a bit. For a lot less than $1000, you could get a BUD (big ugly dish) and capture the original uncompressed feeds with a cheap analog capture card and have superior results compared to what your looking to do.

If you want digital OTA signals captured digitally, that's easy. Buy the MyHD or buy a STB w/ a firewire output. But w/ D* it's really a waste of time.
