Modern sources for TL/ML TL/Voigt designs?

Hello -

Back in 2000 I built a set of Voigt pipes from plans I found on the 'net. They sound great but now that I have a better shop I want to play with other single-driver designs, especially mass loaded transmission lines. I now own a set of Tang Band W8-1772s but have no cabinet to put them in.

Thing is, design information about these has disappeared! Martin J King has disabled his MathCad, Bob Brines has gone silent, and the websites I used 20 years ago are long gone. Everything I can find seems to be from sketchy sources from the back alleys of the the internet.

I'm a woodworker, not an engineer... where can I find a good set of science-based plans than match my drivers?

Thanks for your assistance,
Jason

Using the published spec. Q is a bit lower than ideal. You don't mention what amplifier you're using, but assuming 0.5ohm series R for typical speaker wire loop resistance, connection losses, you could try this:

L = 72in
St = 0
Sl = 140in^2
Zd = 36in
Zv = 68in
Dv = 3in
Lv = 3/4in

Lag back & one sidewall 1in OC-703 acoustic fibreglass board or its equivalent rockwool, SAE-F10 rated felt, jute carpet underlay or similar. Avoid egg-crate foam.

Fb [Fp] = 40Hz
F3 = 40Hz [nominal anechoic]
F6 = 34Hz [nominal anechoic]

Should work fine for SET amplifiers with an output Z up to about 3ohms, slightly more damping around tuning.

Should do a reasonable job; it's is purposefully not hyper-refined -I've used a slightly broader tuning since we're keying purely off the published data and most people seem to favour a slightly more resonant pipe characteristic. If you want it cleaner, lag all internal faces to about 6in below the driver, then back & one sidewall for the remainder.

As narrow as practical, width & depth could be shuffled for a wider less deep box.

Scott and Dave, I am genuinely astonished at the generosity with which you have given your time. Scott, thank you for researching the specs for my drivers. Dave, you are -the best- for making a drawing for me!

Good news is that the volumes you spec are pretty much identical to the Voigt Pipes I built way back when – looks like with some minor tweaks I can just drop in my new drivers.

GM – Hornresp looks like a great resource. I’m glad that the DIY design community still has tools to play with.

Thank you all again!

Cheers,
Jason
