Modern parts in old Zenith Console

Hello all first post and first project. Hope i'm in the right forum.

I've got an old zenith console radio from the 50s that i'm working on modernizing... I've pulled all the old parts out of it. While I might be able to get them working, I'm doing it as a suprise for a friend, and they would better appreciate playing MP3s and Pop Top 40.

The radio will be in a 10*15 room, I want to be able to "fill" the room with sound as best as possible.

The radio has a top section with the knobs and controls (hence removed) and a lower section where it has a Mono Speaker.

My Design Concerns:
  • Doing this on the relative cheap
  • Do I angle the speakers 10-15 degrees from center
  • Convert source signal to MONO?
  • Ported Sub box or not?
  • Is it wise to run the DVC sub from a stereo source, or do I convert to mono?
  • Use 2 double gang pots in original controls postion... I may have to figure out a way to extend

I don't want to modify the cabinet in any externally visible way. If my friend ever wants it back "stock" my stuff can be easily removed.

I've got a bottom section for the speakers, and ideally a small sub. The space I have is 22 H x 21.5 Wide and 9.5 Inches deep.

I'm considering using 2 small Sony bookshelf I already own in the top section. These are 10 H X 7 W X 7 Deep. They can be lined up with the existing speaker fabric grill.

I plan to stick a small 8 inch sub in the bottom section in a custom box. I have about 10*21.5*9 inches to work with here. I may use a sealed enclosure or not, I plan on having the speaker face forwards. I'll have to build this box myself.

Amps:
Right now i'm planning on buying 2 of the following amps from parts express
TDA7492 Digital Audio Amplifier Board 2x50W
TDA7492 Digital Audio Amplifier Board 2x50W

I figure 1 can run the speakers, and the other can a dual voice coil sub...

I plan to use 2 of the following for volume control
Parts Express 10K Audio Taper Stereo Potentiometer 1/4" Shaft

My intent is to wire from the main volume pot to the the 1st amp. And run it to the 2nd volume pot and then to the 2nd amp to run the sub. (Do i need to make this mono).

Any thoughts concerns, recommendations? I've never done something like this before, so getting my feet wet, and having something that works is more important than having something perfect. That being said I want it to be good enough that it outplays a boombox.

I replaced the "speakers" with felted pockets for vinyl. The amp is a 7297 (custom pcb), Boozehound phono-pre (with LDR inputs), and a chinese 1543 DAC. It's all battery powered. I don't have other photos atm, but there's two giant 48mm knobs for selector and volume that are mounted onto a brass plate with a hand ground edge, that goes inside.

Oh ya, the grille is custom replacement for the plastic one. I aged it a bit. I think it's Oregon fur or something... I forgot.
