Modding a Epson ELP3300......need ideas

Howdy,

I'm in the planning process of retro Fitting a 250w MH into a Epson ELP 3300. The idea occurred when I bought the projector w/o the bulb and found out that the bulb itself is $300. I didn't even pay that much for the projector!!!!
So I thought that this would be a good learning experience and a way to have DIY project.

Specs:
ELP-3300 - three separate polysilicon LCDs - 16.7 million colors - 640 x 480 (800x 600 compressed) resolution - 330 ANSI - 17 pounds.

Other than the light being gone, on of the lens is missing, the outside lens is missing, so I need to find a replacement or a new zoom lens.
1) Does anyone have any info on the ELP 3000/3300 lens? That would be a big help. I'm terrible at figuring out what type of lens to use.

2) Also, does anyone know where to get a 250w MH bulb and ballast? Something like the one at DIYlabs.org...but I'm trying to find something cheaper.

I'll post pictures in a bit, along with the progress I am making.

Progress!!!!

Howdy,

Making progress....
I've managed to take the projector apart and disconnect the ballast for the light from the power supply. I worried that the projector would shut down and not work with out the use of the ballast. But, it runs fine with out it, the LED for the bulb just stays on,....I can live with that.

So far I've ran the projector for a hour and haven't had any problems from the power supply.

I'm still looking into the 250 watt set up, adn the substitute lens.

this is a pic of it with the cover off.

the lens....

Howdy,

I've decided to play around with the lens now. I just grabbed a desk lamp with an energy saver bulb and stuck it in the bottom.

The lens set up on the projector is incomplete, I'm missing the outside lens. I can project an image that is 1" x 1" that is 2" away from the wall, so I guess that needs to change.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a lens to use? I want to keep the overall size of the projector as small as possible.

This is the pic of the lens.

np buddy, ive never tried a slr lens, ive been talking to a buddy of mine a while about it, it should work no problems but remeber camera lenses have a very short focal on the back of them, im sure it would work in your case without any problems, keep us updated if u try it.

I was thinking about camera zoom lens, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. There are so many types.
All I remember to look out for is the F stop, the bigger the number, more light let in.

What about using a slide projector zoom lens? That should work the same also.

I'm still looking at SLR zoom lens, but all I have seen is big price tags so far.

Does anyone have the 250 watt MH lamp from DIYlabs.org?
I need the measurements for the length of the bulb sitting in the sockets.

Thanks,

ya thats should work u will need to measure the distance from the lens thats in there now to the front of your barrel to find out what focal u need first, also the lens should be about the same size at the back, the bigger the front lens the better.
