Mixing Centre channel into L & R

Problem: difficulty in hearing the dialog on DVD playback, due to the background sounds (incidental music, etc) being too loud. Although I have a DVD player with 5.1 analogue outputs, the TV is only stereo.

Idea: Ignore the downmixed stereo output. Instead, take the L, R and Centre from the 5.1 outputs and put them through some kind of mixer to blend the centre channel into the L & R channels, with the original L & R attenuated. Hopefully this will result in the background sounds being quieter.

Question: can this be done entirely passively? Or is a buffer stage needed before the centre channel is replicated? The attached images show my general thoughts. Any comments would be gratefully received.
