@cogitech well, I lost just under 1/4" in length but usefulness is another matter altogether. On a 0-1 scale, I'd put that at a solid 0.7
@AcoustatAnswerMan my uncle shorted the positive battery terminal of his car battery to ground via a heavy copper bracelet. I only saw the aftermath, but it was quite the burn.
@dptucunduva that's awful. I went months afterwards where simply switching my saw on sent a split second of terror through my system. I did pick up my guitar after 2-3 years and it didn't hurt my playing too much... probably because I'm just crappy at it anyway

While recapping and 70's Nikko receiver, I replaced a large filter cap in wrong polarity...a sudden noise that quickly got louder and popped like a firecracker...I left the room to escape the debris and figured the receiver was ruined.
Put in a new filter cap correctly just to prove it was a goner... all I had to due was to reset the breaker button on the back panel (I love those buttons on old Nikko's...much better than hidden fuses) and it came to life like a charm sounding better than it did before the filter caps and other PS caps were replaced....harmless in the end but quite startling!

In my younger days I built a valve pre amp.
I powered it up for first time and it didnt work.
So powered off and touched components and got a big shock.
My tutor said to discharge the supply capacitor before touching circuit.
So powered up again still didnt work so discharged the supply capacitor.
Touched circuit and got another big shock.
I had forgotten to turn it off !
Amazingly I am now 67 and still alive.
I am more careful these days with valve amps and have an LED/resistor across main supply capacitor to show when its charged.
I alos use a discharge resistor across power capacitor to slowly drain volts.
