Mission Pass Labs Power Amp model

(Oops "Missing" not "Mission")

I proudly own an XA30.8 but seems like there should be at least one more stereo model class A amp.

I already have huge mono block woofer amps on either side of my equipment rack hence no room for mono-block mains. I suspect I'm not the only one without room for mono blocks.

The only option for more power in a stereo amp is to jump up to the X250.8 model. That would actually be a little to much power and less pure class A power.

I've read reports the XA30.8 sounds better than the X250.8

Seems like the X250.8 could have been configured as another stereo class A amp before requiring one to have to go to mono blocks.

Would it be a stupid (or not possible) idea to buy an X250.8 and bias it more into class A operation?

I love my XA30.8 and now feel like I don't ever want to buy another companies amp because I really feel the sound quality would be very hard to beat. Just seems we are missing one class A stereo model for those of us who would like a pinch more than 30 watts.

The enemy is heat. To combat that you need heatsink, and the required heatsink needs to be much bigger, as does the power supply. This is why the next step-up in power is monoblocks, to double the heatsinks and PSU.

Anyway, the best thing about the XA30.8 is that it's really a 100WPC amp that has 30W of class-A bias. But Pass Labs likes to name the class-A amps the bias power. 🙂 🙂 🙂

So it's not clipping until almost 3x it's named output power.

This is the exact opposite of deceptive marketing, the so-called "music power" or "dynamic power" that you see on budget components. Those people take a small amp and show that it can deliver very short peaks of more power (as the filter capacitors drain... 🙁 ) and then pretend that it's a meaningful number, because "music isn't a sine wave."

We have (as I recall) 5 chassis times 2 for stereo/mono and times another
2 for Class A vs AB = 20 potential models. Not counting integrateds and FW.

We can't address that many permutations, so we take our best shot.

Thanks for the replies.

The XA30.8 is probably enough power. I just "feel" like I want a bigger one. Even when I crank the crap out of it I've never seen the needle move to the right more than 1/8th inch. Almost always less than 1/8th inch.

I'm just going to try to put the idea out of my head.
