LOL, that's Alan from my robotics group! great guy! one of the nicest people i have ever met! He has several of these made out of old Tek scopes and stuff!
I think its a kit you buy and then add to the scope. you should see the robotics stuff these guys build! I mean BRILLIANT stuff! He used to work for Cray Research and now works for Logic Inc. he has helped me quite a bit with writing my chipkit Arduino code for my DAC and has helped with with various projects here and there. this website is really really old but check out some of the projects! Kilian's Robot Shop of Horrors
The project I think Alan should write up for Elektor is the Ring light he made for his stereo scope. he machined a round piece of thick plexiglas into a donut shape and cut a groove on one side of it and mounted 2-colors of white SMD led's. then built a dual channel PWM controller so he can not only adjust the brightness, but by adjusting the balance between to the 2 colors of white LED's, he can adjust the color temperature! really helps when you are looking trough the scope at a PCB and you can vary the color for a more realist it view of the components! plus as it is a ring that mounts over the lens piece, the light shines all around the viewing area with less shadows! amazing!
