My subjective review on the YTmac-05.
Speaker placement around 8’6” apart and 44” from rear wall. Slightly towed in around 3/4”
Playing Bad Bunny ‘MIA’ for my low bass track (careful on the volume). The low bass fills the room well for a 5” I’m very pleased with the bass. Playing Donald Fagen ‘morph the cat’ the bass stays tight and loud with no chuffing of the port which any speaker I build MUST DO or there scrapped.
Playing 2Pac ‘dear mama’ for upper bass low midrange as Pac should stay exactly in the center of the stage I thought his gurgling voice sounded perfect while handling the (rap) bass notes. Also playing Eric Godoy’s “Aeris” for the low strings in this. I thought the strings sounded just thick enough and the background chatter (recorded in a bar) is still very audible.
For mine and many others I’m sure, i played the usual vocal artists. I believe the staging is open and does stretch well beyond the speaker placement Amber Rubarth “full moon in Paris” and with the speaker out at 5ft they almost disappear. With the speaker, I really tried to make the mid range and top end very neutral. The only hot sounding music would be some 80s hard rock like Kix, Autograph and Headpins certain songs.
Like I said, this is subjective obviously, but I will be keeping these so they will be at DDIY and Iowa 2024.

Thanks for all the inputs. It’s given me much to think about. I had originally thought of a Linton clone, but a 2way looks interesting. I used to have some large Advents that I liked, and was thinking of something similar, with a little more presents.

What's your room size and budget not including cabinets, please?

Will give people a better basis on which to help you. In the meantime, if you like big 3 ways, check out Paul's Tarkus and Pit Viper builds.

However, three way crossovers have many parts, including some high value and there will be more $$ than for a two way. I would also add that while I've built several two ways, 3 way crossovers scare the heck out of me in terms of soldering and connections.

3-way as said is more difficult to do successfully, and likely more expensive.

Larger format 2-ways, I'm going to link the A26 Devore clones, the Seas Aphel project, and Troels' latest Seas-22; they all have some things in common

Hi, my name is Julian , I’m planning a 3way with an 8” woofer. I looking to find a good reasonably priced midrange 4-5 “. Cross over point between 500-800.
I checked it out. There is a lot of info to digest. Good crossover info. I had thought of using the rs225p in a three way . But the i think a 2 way keeping cost to a minimum, would be fun, and something I could afford to get moving on .
Hi Julian,
With the rs225p you can use a rs100-4
According to this tests : https://www.justdiyit.com/grand-comparatif-medium-et-large-bande-partie-1/
Note A 3 ways is hard to make without tools. Try to find a kit or someone who have measurements tools. The placement of the speaker driver on the box is the first step and it is very important to have a smooth response and use less components in the crossover.

I don’t mind buying a calibrated mic., I have a computer, what else do I need,? I assume I can generate test tones with the computer. One approach is to reverse engineer similar speakers, and build a database to work from. Laborious I know. But this is entertainment.

Yes you can simulate a crossover without measurements. You can do it with response curves and apply diffraction on them or with standard models of drivers, it is less precise. I use the two methods because it avoid me to buy the drivers, and I am lazy.
The reverse engineering is useful to model a crossover 🙂
A three ways with a 4/5" is not easy to build and make it sounds good but if you have the patience. I have build several three ways and they worth the time I spend of them 🙂 They work better than my two ways because they have better details, better LF and HF extensions, better openness.
