If one goes by quality of motor design if I'm not mistaken they order like this:
1st + 2nd: 12m-4631g00 and W12CY003
3rd: 12m-4631g00
4th: MCA12RC
Atleast when Zaph did his tests the 12m-4631g didn't have a copper sleeve and it performed worse, the cheaper seas also lacks copper in the motor.
Both the more expensive SEAS and SS midranges have good designed motors so any of them would work fine, the others would work fine also depending on what result you want. They are all good drivers, just because two of them are better doesn't mean the others are bad =)

Yup, ofc I meant the underhung illuminator on 1st / tied 1st instead of the revelator there also =)

I would not call any of them midranges. They just don't hold up high enough. A great choice for a 2 way mini monitor, but not a real midrange. I have been looking at the "full range" drivers. Some of them are light enough and small enough they look like a very good mid. Jordan maybe. Louther. If I want a real mid, I want it to handle the entire most sensitive range, not have to be crossed over in the middle of it 2 to 2.5K.
Your mileage may vary.

Only heard the 12MU8731 and 12MU4731 a few times holding them in my hand and playing full range and I am already in love. Listened to the mids in my SF Cremonas (unfortunately only as part of the whole speaker) which are based on the 15cm ScanSpeak Revelator driver, and there is a difference.
I think the 12MU will make a very nice mid, the voice characteristics are similar to the Revelator series but the Illuminator seems a little more refined.
Not sure if I can put it into the proper audiophile jargon, but here are my findings in laymans terms.
The voice seems slightly more natural with the 12MU, not much as both of them are a paper driver and there is some colour to the sound but it's not unpleasant.
The 12MU seems more detailed... hard to really tell doing the comparison I'm doing but there seems to be a bit more detail there, a bit more refinement to the sound, a bit crisper.
The 12MU is nice and sharp even though it is a tiny driver the bass does seem really tight (what there is of it, its not a sub after all)
Don't know if it is my imagination but it seemed like I could almost pick where things were located in relation to the microphone a lot better. I think that is imaging?
All and all I am very happy with them and cant wait to get them in a cabinet with the RAAL tweeters 🙂

If its foam it's not like that old foam of yesteryear that was flakey and prone to malting when it had a bit of age, its quite smooth in texture and appearance.
Feels almost rubber like but I don't think it is, I think it is some kind of black coated foam.
When you put a finger on it and release it springs back much like rubber would. Maybe its a rubber coated foam???

Here you go... The phone photo doesn't show the detail very well... the glue part is very smooth, the suspension is smooth and the outer foam bit is a bit rough in texture. The photo shows all 3 as far more similar then they really are in real life.

What about a lot of the 3 inch? Aurasound, Vifa, Fostex, Jorden etc? They seem to be easier to use into the range where the ribbon can come in but should still be fine from 700 or so?
