midrange and fostex 166

I have recently completed the OEM cabinet(BHL) for the fostex 166 driver.
I also just finished a mono block se 2a3 amp. The sound is truly amazing. I previously used a small pair of BR Fostex 167 speakers and
generaly I had to tame or reduce the midrange ,volcals in particular.
Now I find that the vocals are very listenable but lacking a bit in presence that the smaller speakers had . There is no damping on the speakers, just stuffing in the cabinet. Is there any tweek to bring out the vocals a bit more?

Hi Jeff

My first reaction would be to remove all the stuffing from inside the cabinet, and listen to the result. Then progressively add it back in until you're happy, starting with the compression chamber alone, then adding a little to other strategic points after that -it's usually pretty easy to tell which area needs more. Damping horns is often rather room dependant, but I'm amazed you don't have enough presence in the vocal regions -the FE166E is pretty hot across this zone, with a lift in it's response, so you might just have over-done the damping a bit for your room / system / taste.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you might actually have a ballanced response at the moment, and you're just not used to it. Did your FE167Es in small BR cabinets have any baffle-step compensation? If not, they won't have had much LF, and their response would drop by 3-4db below ~700Hz or so. Your new horns could well simply have brought some of that missing LF back to you.

HOT ZONE

Thanks Scott.

I did not use any BSC in prev speaker so my ears were prety much blasted in the mid region. Good point about "balanced" sound now. The room is probably a bit small for a horn also. I will remove the damping today and gradualy add to taste. Have you
ever used the Fostex super tweeter in a design ?

Thanks again

Jeff

Hi Jeff

You're welcome

I did use them once, with a pair of very large BIBs I built for a friend using the FF225K, which really does need some help from about 8KHz. Initially we capped the thing off, but I gather Simon's been playing with an L pad. Worked very well. I doubt the 6 1/2in Fostex units would really benefit from it though, aside from possibly the FF165K, although I use it, and I don't miss the extra 3KHz or so of harmonics.

Regards
Scott
