I have a one-piece Yamaha DD55 drum kit (7 pads + HH and Kik pedals). It has an audio out with pretty cheesy drum sounds. It also has MIDI out. Probably a dumb question but is there an decent drum samples interface that would take the MIDI output from the DD55 and provide an audio output? (Not PC or iOS based).

If it has MIDI out, then any MIDI sound module with drum sounds can be triggered by it. take your choice. You can probably find drum machines with MIDI inputs, but it doesn't have to be a dedicated drummer, many other MIDI sound modules have drums within.
Over the years YAMAHA has made a bunch of them, but other excellent brands aalso make them.
