Microsoft Edge v Chrome.

I know there are a lot of really hard core experienced computer folk on this forum which is why I am asking the question here.

Really pleased with my tiny Azulle BYTE 3 after I added a 500gb Samsung SSD which came with Windows 10 Pro. My last experience with Microsoft was Windows 8 - what a difference. I keep getting prompts to use Microsoft Edge.

Lots of really good and useful features with 10 Pro, so should I drop Chrome for Edge? I'd like to get some serious balanced advice before committing.

Chrome is remarkably lean and does not allow junk to add itself. I switched to Chrome years ago - right when it launched. The only issue that I've ever had with it was a look-alike browser that installed itself - but wasn't actually Chrome. I nuked it once I realized what happened.

Edge is a huge improvement over Explorer. MS Explorer allowed websites to modify it to the extent that it became more and more bloated the more you used it. And that's why everyone switched to Firefox or Chrome. Microsoft realized that home users weren't using Explorer anymore and developed Edge (with the help of a lot of user feedback.) Once advantage Edge has is that Microsoft keeps security very up to date which is great for online shopping, bill paying, etc. It is also modifiable like Firefox although I haven't dove that deep into it yet.

But I still use Chrome as it isn't a both a browser and webpage with news and suggested links - just a lean, clean browser.

Yes I see already what you mean. I don't need to make shopping lists etc. but some of the features are nice. Having up to the moment very local weather info is nice and news features from the UK, click and it's there. The security aspect you mention is important because who doesn't pay bills or file their tax returns or get bank statements online these days. I don't live near any big cities, nearly 200 K return journey Carmaux/Toulouse so online shopping makes economic sense.

That windows 8 really was crap.

I'm using Windows 11 Pro 64 bit and Microsoft Edge and are happy.
As you say Win 8 was crap, I liked Win 7 and Win 10, but Win 11 is so much better.
I used Google Chrome some years ago because in my wiev it was better than MS Explorer.

Exactly, Edge is Chrome and, many believe, a better Chrome in many ways. Chrome is part of Googles evil plan - the days of "don't be evil" are long gone - and, strange as it may sound to some (many?) Microsoft is probably way less evil than Google these days.

...should I drop Chrome for Edge? .... before committing.

It's not a monopoly, no matter how much they wish. No commitment.

I have FireFox, Chrome, and a very old MS IE on this machine. In the past I have had 7 mostly obscure browsers on one machine.

Yes, the O/S loves it if you will designate one as "primary", what to use if you poke a URL and don't specify a browser. Win7 had the notion that IE was THE browser, and even after I anointed FF as default URL handler about once a year something forces MSIE11 to the surface (usually something I didn't want, shareware begging etc).

Certain sites work much better in Chrome, although I too am past loving Google. Opera was recently re-engined. There are heaps of FireFox forks, some even built for Windows, some even slightly different.

BTW, these days new browsers usually offer (or insist) on copying your Favorites and Bookmarks from any other browser they find on your machine.

Just install Edge (or whatever). At first run it may ask "do you want me to be your very favorite browser? Please, please?" Just say NO! for now. You can still launch it from desktop, menus, task-tiles. Use Chrome M-W-F, Edge T-Th-Sat, and FireFox on Sunday. Which do you like?

Nice first impression of Edge:

This page isn’t working right now
microsoftedgewelcome.microsoft.com can't currently handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500

That's strange I simply copied microsoftedgewelcome.microsoft.com and pasted it in using Edge and guess what it worked. So someting is maybe ****** on your machine with a bunch of browsers.😉

Yes, of course it worked 2nd time. That's a Microsoft tradition. Why so snotty?

Then it imported my passwords from another browser when I had specifically told it NOT too. And crashed. This has been reported in the press as a spyware-like behavior.

OTOH it is even more eager than Chrome to close totally without warning. Lost a heap of tabs about Wikipedia's history of excess begging. (Yes, they are down there in History but fug-it.)

PRR,
that's exactly what I have done, I'll stick with Chrome for now and as you say I don't have to make it my default browser.

I resisted getting a mobile until a few years ago, I really don't like Big Brother knowing where I am and as for social media - uck that for a game of soldiers. The people I want to be able to communicate with can, the rest of the world can't. You know I would really like to have a big ongoing brown out just to see what happens to all those mobile junkies when they can't charge up their phone smack. Apparently there will be mass breakdowns.

LOL!
I can see it now.... a zombie apocalypse!
Mass fighting over USB chargers, solar panels, fakebookers and twitgoons lashing out for survival.
😱
Cue up the Twilight Zone theme music!

I don't have that problem. 😉

Well...
I think Microsoft and Google are both pretty much the same level of Evil, but Microsoft is considerably more annoying. Google is the creepy neighbor who is always spying on you. Taps your phone lines, watches you with a telescope, etc. Microsoft is the clingy girlfriend/boyfriend/otherfriend who isn't really causing harm, but is bugging the s*** out of you. All. The. Time.

Any technology that pesters me and/or tells me what to do is incredibly annoying. Any technology that I am not in 100% control of annoys me.

The only reason I am still on Windows is because 50% of my daily-use software is Windows only. The moment I can use Linux as my primary OS I'm jumping the MS ship.

About the only MS product I sort of like is Excel. Word has been largely S***canned in favor of LaTeX (with LibreOffice for those few times I need a traditional document editor), and PowerPoint aggravates me every time I use it.

And the biggest offender in the "annoying technology" domain? My phone. It really wants to be the center of my universe, and I really don't allow that. The requirement for two-factor authentication makes this worse.

I've heard some good things about recent versions of the Opera web browser, so I may give that a go at some point. Until then it's Chrome / Firefox.

Alright, I get it, I have the personality of someone who is 150 years old.

I wouldn't mind the idea of an internet brownout, as long as EVERYONE ELSE has it at the same time. If it's just me, that would really stink.

Things I wish the world had a "forced temporary break" from:

-Social Media.
-Email.
-11:59:59 PM hard deadlines.
-95% of all smartphone apps.
-Velociteks.

Give me Firefox any day. I dislike Chrome and Edge is no better.

So you need to dislike FF as well because it's all the same.
Firefox is not what it was long time ago.. Here two pics of FF and Edge.. Main Screen 1st one is FF second is Edge.. I do not use Chrome to much hidden Trackers.
If you check source code then will find out very soon that it's based to a great part on CHROME..

If one reads Microsoft's Information about Edge, then it's also stated very clear that EDGE is CHROME..

I think they are doing this to place ADVERTISEMENTS more easy. and it's full of addies, and it's a big PIA to get the Addies out of it.. then also full of tracking tools against the USER..

There are other Browsers one can use. In China all Google is blocked by the Government. Reason as they say: Google is Dangerous Virus. Including FB and other DATA THEFT Apps-.!

My two cents about that
