I use a tripod with a 4' stick strapped to the top. I've used boom stands and like them, but if I were going to buy one, I'd get the stands that photographers use (they are very sturdy):

My mic capsule is on the end of a 36" long 1/4" diameter tube. The other end of the tube has a little aluminum block (about 3/8" wide) that I can attach to a camera tripod. I have a little tripod I bought off ebay for ~$10 and a bigger one for an old school vhs video camera if I need more height. Both of these setups do a reasonable job of avoiding creating large reflective surfaces in places that can reflect sound back to the mic capsule.
