I've never owned a direct drive turntable but do have 2 beltdrive Micro Seiki turntables and the 301's of course.
A chance to buy the Micro dd came along a week ago and I decided to buy the ratty looking beast as a restoration project.
The plinth will need repainting, which I will do by airbrush in its original colour. The faceplate with legends will have to be replaced as it has corroded. Some savage had broken the cover at the back and tossed the male parts of the hinges. This will also have to be fabricated, a new panel glued-in at the back and the lid polished.
It's getting worse...The original panelmount din arm lead socket had been removed (because the seller wanted to try the tt with his amp!), and some nasty armwire cobbled on. I have already bought a new din socket and will have to build a new armwire - din at one end and phonos at the other.
I downloaded the manual from VE and there's also something strange I noticed. VE's pic of the back shows what looks like a f of 8 mains socket but this table now has a two core captive mains lead. I'm therefore unsure if a 3-core or 2-core mains lead is to be used. If one looks at the VE pics of the back, it looks like the mains socket has 3 pins inside the connector socket, but the small board where the mains lead is soldered to, looks unmolested.
The 'table has 4 'shockaborber' feet below the plinth and one had an aluminium cap with a felt protector missing. This I have already remade by turning one on my lathe and punching out the felt.
So, a summary of the bad news: Repair and polish lid and fabricate lid-side hinge parts, re-paint, build new armwire (here I'm not sure if the earth lead was part of the din equipped cable as there is no separate tagscrew at the back). I know I cannot have a 3-core mains cable AND an armlead earth connected to the cast alu plinth so I will just have to stick with the 2-core mains cord and fit an insulated armcable tag at the back as I don't know how arm earthing (for going to the pre) was originally done. The painted faceplate with legends was corroded and a bit battered. Until now, I could not find a local firm to make me one of these and last night, I did some extensive 'massaging' of the original, clamping the plate between aluminium bar with a large vise and h/d G-clamps. It's not perfect yet, but I'm getting there.
The good news - the 202-L arm is in good condition, all the accessories were in the concealed dropdown tray, I got both of the beautiful headshells and I also got a brandnew Micro mm cartridge which I consider as very good as I tried it already.
If anyone here still owns/uses a Micro MR-711, I would really appreciate some feedback about the mains lead, the arm wire and images of the cover-side hinge parts.
I'm not sure if I can upload multiple pics, but I have more images of the innards, if anyone would like a view of the beast's innards.
