Media PC to replace DVD and CD

I am thinking of splitting my current Hi-Fi setup to separate the TV/DVD side from the music side. Currently I have all my music and video played via my 2 channel Hi-Fi. The plan is to separate out the 2 channel CD side and to gradually improve it and ultimately to have it in a different room.

I am very tempted to try a Media PC as the source for DVD's and CDs connected to the LCD TV, I will replace the 2 channel amp with a fairly cheap multi channel receiver. I will also use the Media Pc to provide CD playback and also access MP3 etc music stored on my home network.

Currently I have a Arcam DV88 DVD player, what I would like to know is what sort of DVD quality a Media PC is capable of?

Has anyone done this and if so I would be grateful for any information and advice.

Thanks.

I've been thinking the same thing, with using the mPC as a digital crossover to boot. One apparently can get the audio in/out of the PC with reasonable latency, but I haven't tried it yet.

On the other hand, the new miniMac seems well-qualified to the task. modulo any multi-channel audio requiring a DAC on the Firewire or USB ports.

DSP_Geek, I would also like to think about doing that as well but I think that may be a bit further ahead for me !

rfbrw, thats one of my favorite threads as you will see from the number of times I have brought it up to the top, however it is much more to do with the highest of fidelity possible whereas I am looking for a cost effective multimedia solution.

I do believe thats the work being done by those guys and other will lead to solutions that many of us will be using fairly soon.
