I think I know now why we have a difference of opinion - most of the checking has been online where the BJT is shown - pins DOWN -
on all my equivalent books its shown pins UP .

Thanks for getting involved. Hopefully the 2N5087 will work; the pinout is the same as the original which makes mounting easier.

To close out this thread:
2N5087 is a correct PNP to replace q5/6 on my late model McIntosh MC2105. Didn't check, but there should be a related NPN to replace q1/2/4/5. Base is in the center (as the original), but C&E are switched, so check the schematic when installing.
