The Motorola MC3340 has been discontinued. It was simple and I happily used it.
Can anyone tell me if there is a substitute that is simple to use as a Voltage controlled amplifier or attenuator please.

Thank-you,

Simple, comparatively high noise and high THD%.

I've seen folks use a pot and a serial ADC to write a word to a digitally controlled pot, frankly if you're going to go this route you should consider something really great like the Texas Instruments PGA2310.

Maxim had some easily controllable digital pots.
