MC preamp design pointers

Hi,

I'm interested in building a phono pre-amp of the cost is no object variety, to use between my Garrard 301 and a Linn Klimax Control preamp (which lacks a phono stage unlike my earlier Linn Kairn).

Low noise is clearly a must and happy to consider a transformer input stage. I prefer solid state over valve for this sort of low noise application having spent years cooling things down to reduce noise (although for power applications I have used both in the past).

I liked the Linn Linto as a preamp and the design in the final chapters of the book by Vogel on low noise RIAA preamps looks interesting, but I don't know of any comments from anyone who has built one.

I also vaguely recollect an interesting design by Douglas Self in the 80s, but can no longer find the original articles.

Any ideas welcome....

Alan

I probably should have said that I lack any kind of phono stage; not just the MC preamp, so that includes the RIAA equalization stage(s). The Douglas Self design I had in mind was not the one in Linear audio; it was Wireless World in December 87 (I found the reference but not the WW issue, my storage system is a bit "ecclectic")
