Materials for sound improvement - question

Given the amount of physical materials available on the general market for Insulation against Heat, Sound and Vibration in housebuilding and other spheres, I am interested to know how to "test" some of these products for their Hi-Fi qualities.

For example; to line the internals of a Loudspeaker.......possibilities exist for a multitude of rubber or fiberglass products! How do I, as a mere audiophile, determine if a £5.00 per metre product (available say for house construction ) will achieve the same results as a £50.00 hifi per meter product?

I'm interested in knowing how to test such a 1m squared product, and what equipment you feel I might need.

My interest is firstly building a subwoofer and progressing onto room-wall insulation.

How do I actually TEST the Rockwool, Rubber, Poly....?
